He would save Tasha. If it was the last thing he did...
Chapter Twenty
Tasha lay on the cold floor, trying to keep her panic level to a minimum. She had no idea where she was or who was watching her, but she could hear voices coming from her right. Not close. She would bet whoever was talking was standing right outside the room.
“What do you expect me to do with her?”
Fucking Chet. Her head throbbed as it all came back to her.
Zach. They’d shot Zach. Zach was dead. She was in Chet’s custody. Or Oakley’s, perhaps.
She was on the floor, cold concrete against her cheek. Her hands were bound behind her back. She would bet it was zip ties. Her legs were free, but it was hard as hell to run when her arms were tied.
“I expect you to take care of her before we bring Nash back,” Oakley demanded. “You’ll take video of her as proof of life. I’m certainly not dragging her out in the field. Anything can happen out there, and I believe in mitigating my risks.”
“I thought you would…” Chet began.
At least the fucker was having second thoughts about actually killing her.
“Do you want what I have on the rest of the group? Do you want the truth about the Canadian?” Oakley asked.
She could practically hear Chet standing up taller. “I’ll get it done. But you better give me what I need. You have no idea what her father will do if he ever connects me to this. I was careful. I know CCTV didn’t pick me up, but if he even gets a hint… All I’m saying is that fucker is dangerous.”
He should be more worried about her mom and sisters. Her dad was a freight train they would all see coming. Her mother would smile and cry prettily and then stab that motherfucker in the back, but only after she’d fed him his own balls.
They were going to kill her. Her parents were going to kill her. Her sisters would never let her live this down.
If she survived.
She had to get away. If she didn’t show, Dare would run. Dare was with her mom. They would have a plan, but it would work far better if she wasn’t there to be a distraction.
Or would that mean they lost the chance at Oakley? She couldn’t exactly go on the evening news and testify that he’d kidnapped her. The Agency would want her to protect her identity.
“Guys, she’s awake,” another familiar voice said.
She groaned because she hadn’t realized Mike was sitting a couple of feet away.
There was nothing to do except sit up. At least now she could start to get her head clear. Her arm ached as she moved.
That asshole. Chet had taken out her locator chip. She’d had it implanted in her upper right bicep when she’d joined the Agency.
“Hurts like hell, doesn’t it?” Chet stared down at her. “It’s so much better to simply have your tech override the system and show you’re on a plane back to the States.”
“My father will still find me. Do you think he can’t put two and two together?” She wasn’t sure what the fucker was thinking. Damn, her arm ached. There was a rudimentary bandage around it. “TJ knows you’re not on the plane.”
“TJ can fuck himself. He thinks I went on another plane because I’m heading to Langley and he’s going back to his base. And I won’t worry about him for long. Like I said, I have an accident planned for your cousin,” Chet said with a shrug. “I always knew I would either be a part of this family and enjoy the privileges that come with being a Taggart, or I would destroy you all. You chose my path when you broke off our engagement. I know your father’s been messing with my assignments. What I’m coming back with will put me on top, and no one will be wiser. I’ll have brilliantly done my job and your dad will have gotten one of his operatives killed. And a target, since I doubt Nash survives the experience.”
“I planned on giving him back to his father.” Oakley stood beside Chet, towering over the man. “But I think that’s likely impossible now. He’ll tell Taggart I’m the one who took his daughter.”
Chet had a smirk on his face, one that just dared her to tell.
He was such an asshole. He hadn’t told Oakley anything. Chet had to have a good idea that a member of her family was watching over Dare and would likely be there when Oakley showed up. Chet and Mike would be gone once they got the intel.
“Don’t you want to know what he’s planning on stealing from Dare’s father?” She couldn’t tell Oakley her parents would likely be at that meeting with Dare.
