“And kinksters are excellent when it comes to cleaning up,” her mother added. “They know how to get blood out of anything.”
“This is why no one thinks this team can ever work,” Chet announced. “Sure, let’s threaten to kill me. Let’s not care about the fact that it’s your fault we won’t get the information we needed. I will make sure this goes into my report. You guys have a fucking blast playing at being operatives. You’re a bad teen drama. Let’s get out of here, TJ. I’m still your boss until we get back to the States.”
“Come on, man,” TJ protested. “I can’t leave Lou like this.”
Chet proved he was a dick. “You can and you will unless you want me to explain that your whole team fucked up and get every single one of you fuckers back on regular duty. Think they’ll like losing the extra pay? I know Mike won’t, and he’s in control of your ability to be promoted.”
TJ stood, his body at attention. “I’ll get the team ready to move out.” He glanced over at Lou. “Don’t think this is over, LouLou. Not even close.”
Lou didn’t look at him as he strode out, but Tasha noticed she’d taken the glasses off. Likely because Kenz wouldn’t stop talking in her ear.
Chet walked out, and they would probably have to face some nasty music when they got back because of him, but that was a problem for another day.
She took a long breath, hoping they could all calm down now.
“We need to decide how we’re going to move out. I don’t know that we should tip off Oakley if we don’t have to,” she began. “I do think we should talk to the Canadians about what’s going on at Tandy, and we should do it before Dare’s father gets a heads-up.”
It occurred to her that this might be a good start to bringing Dare’s dad down. They could do a lot of the work from Dallas, and if he was worried about his siblings, well, she would bring them to Dallas, too.
“I’ve already talked to Parker’s boss.” Her father took a seat at the table, which led Dare to retake his own.
“They’re going to raid Tandy this evening. They’re sending in a small team and trying to keep it as quiet as possible,” Dare explained.
She should have known something was going on when her dad had taken Dare aside.
“The quiet as possible part is only to keep Oakley from hearing about it,” Dare continued. “I’ve been assured if there are biological weapons being made there, the justice system will come into it. This might take my father out at the knees, and I won’t ever have to deal with him again. He could be arrested by this time tomorrow. Quietly, of course. The CSIS agent promised me he could handle everything.”
Her stomach threatened to take a dive. She’d thought it would take longer.
If his father was handled, there would be no real reason for Dare to stay in Dallas. If he was arrested later this evening, they wouldn’t have to work together.
In fact, he would need to go home to deal with the fallout. There would be every reason for him to be in Toronto and stay there for a long time.
“So our problem now is keeping Oakley from knowing his plans have gone awry,” her mother mused. “According to Huisman, at the very least, Oakley is trying to get a copy of the research they’ve done on the weaponized anthrax. He won’t want CSIS to know about it. He could use the proof to force Dare’s father to be on his side.”
“Which would tip Tandy off, and they could hide the research,” Cooper concluded. “So Oakley needs to believe this is going as planned. He’s going to know Huisman is gone when he doesn’t show up tomorrow afternoon. I’m worried if he figures out Huisman is leaving that he might send someone to check in on Dare. Dare’s the prize here.”
“And we know the man doesn’t mind showing up uninvited.” Tasha shook her head. “I’m not risking it. If he shows up, he does, so you should work fast.”
“I don’t know if I like the idea of losing this chance to take down my father,” Dare argued. “More than that, shouldn’t we be concerned that there are people out there weaponizing anthrax? If anything Ben says is true, shouldn’t we take the chance to avoid the possible attacks that could come from this?”
“CSIS and the Canadian authorities can deal with it,” she explained.
“Unless they aren’t able to,” Dare replied. “I think I should stay around. We know he doesn’t want to kill me.”
“Don’t be naïve, Dare.” Cooper was calm again. “He might not want you dead, but if he thinks you’re a threat in any way, he’ll kill you.”
