“He’s pretty amazing. I don’t know how he did it, but he got Tom to drop that dumbass lawsuit against me,” I say.

“You know I would have eaten his ass up in court.”

“Yeah, but I didn’t want to get you involved in that mess,” I say.

“Fuck him. Look at you. You’re glowing.”

“I’m happy. I love my new job.” I shrug.

“Sounds good to me,” she says. “I need to find some of that happiness for myself… is that your dress? Oh my god, it’s gorgeous.”

I turn to the bed where the gold-and-blue dress is laid out. It is gorgeous. It took my breath away when I first saw it.

“Yeah, Bishop picked it out and had it delivered to the house for me,” I reply.

“Then let’s get you dressed,” my sister squeals.

My heart swells with regret. Maybe Daddy did have a right to be disappointed about me not having a wedding. I feel a little pang in my chest as I think of missing out on this—getting ready for my wedding day with my mother and my sister there to help me.

My sister just zips me up when I have another visitor. My mother steps into the room. She freezes and lifts her hands over her heart and mouth.

“You look so beautiful,” she sobs.

I look down at the one-shoulder dress that snatches my waist and flares out into a wide skirt. I feel like I’m on my way to the Grammys. I look back to my mother and the pride I see on her face.

“I was wrong,” I blurt out. “Not for marrying my husband, but for taking the moment of the wedding from everyone. That wasn’t a thought at the time, but I get how important that moment was to you and Daddy.”

“Oh, Saga,” my mother says as she rushes to embrace me. “I’ve only ever wanted to see you happy. Your father was crushed over the wedding and not getting to approve of your choice first, but he’ll get over it. I think we both just want the best for you.”

“But you both are so angry at me,” I sob.

She pulls away to cup my face in her hands. “You will always be our baby. We want to make sure you’ve picked the right person for you. We may have jumped the gun on throwing your husband under the bus.”

“Okay, I’m going to jump in right here,” Reminisce says. “You and Daddy were dead wrong. It’s embarrassing. If Bishop’s family did the same thing to Saga, you would’ve called them all kinds of racists and bigots—”

“Reminisce,” I groan.

“No, Saga. This needs to be said. You guys thought he was some lame musician chasing money. You didn’t take the time to find out who he was. I mean, come on. Legend needs to be slapped upside the head for starting this in the first place—”

“Wait, what?”

I look at my sister incredulously. I had assumed my parents found out from the news or something. I had no clue it was my brother who told them.

“You didn’t know?” Reminisce turns to me and says. “He was the one who ran to tell Mommy and Daddy you were married to a musician.

“He didn’t even tell them that he was a famous rock star, which I know he did on purpose. He knew Daddy would lose his shit if he found out you married some dusty-ass musician who wasn’t going anywhere.”

I stare at my sister with my mouth open. This is insane. I’m going to kill him. My family wasn’t on board when he first met Anita. She’s not exactly the wealthy match they wanted for him.

“Not that it should matter in the first place, but I told you guys Bishop has a great career,” I say.

“Girl, we’re talking about your father,” my mother says. “By the time you arrived, he had his mind made up. He wasn’t listening to a thing you were saying.”

“But you seem to have had a change of heart,” Reminisce sasses.

“I’m embarrassed by both myself and your father. We’re very good friends with Bishop’s parents. We’ll be eating crow all evening,” my mother says as she blushes.

It takes a moment for her words to fully hit me. I’ve met Bishop’s parents and they never told me they know my mom and dad. I’m completely confused.

“Wait, you know the Morans?”

“Yes,” my mother says, palming her forehead. “Your father performed surgery on Fred some years back. They became good golf buddies afterward. That was so long ago. It’s crazy. I can’t believe you and Bishop have never met.”

“Hold on, the Morans? Tessa and Fred?” Reminisce says.

“Yes,” Mom mumbles. “You have no idea how embarrassing this is. In my defense, I’ve never met Bishop before either. He left to pursue his music by the time I met and became friends with Tessa.

“Your father is too stubborn to be embarrassed, but I feel like an ass. Especially as I thought of how hard it was for me when I met my in-laws the first time.”
