“Honey, it will all work out. Your father and I were just as shocked and startled to hear you two were married, but we were both equally happy for you, if not more. I, for one, can’t wait to meet her.”

“Can you tell me more about her father? Maybe then I can understand how to fix this.”

“Oh, Bishop, that’s a conversation for your father, not me.”

“What’s going on?” I hear my dad ask in the background.

“You were right. Andre isn’t taking things well. Saga is upset and Bishop wants to make things right. He wants to know more about Andre to know how to handle things,” Mom explains.

“I’ll talk to him. Give me the phone,” Dad says.

“Hey, Bishop,” Dad says tiredly.

“Hey, Dad, sorry it’s so late.”

“Don’t worry about it. Congratulations, by the way. I’m proud of you, son.”

“Thanks, Dad.”

“How can I help?”

“I need to know how to get my father-in-law to like me so my wife will stop crying. Her family means everything to her.”

“I wish you would have asked before you got married, but we’re here now. Dr. Walden is upset because he doesn’t know who you are. My friend would have gotten over a lot, but not knowing who you are is going to be the hurdle you have to overcome now.”

“I need to show him who I am. Got it. What else can you tell me?”

I spend about another hour and a half learning who my father-in-law is from my father. I take notes and try my best to figure out how to right my wrongs because one thing I know for sure. I’m not losing my wife over this.

CHAPTER 30

True Friends

Saga

“You suck,” Isha pouts as she sips at her wine cooler.

“It was all spontaneous. It felt right, so I went with it,” I say.

She gives me a mischievous smile. “It was the sex, wasn’t it?”

“You’re a nut,” I chuckle, tossing the cap to my drink at her.

I love this woman. She’s made me laugh all day since she arrived. I needed that to keep from crying nonstop.

“So what’s the story with the giant who picked me up?”

“I was waiting for that question. I saw the way you were looking at him,” I chuckle. “Honestly, I don’t know. I think he’s married, but I heard something about a divorce. I really don’t know,” I reply.

“Damn, it’s always the fine ones who are taken,” she frowns and crosses her chest with her arms.

“Like I said. I don’t know. I could be wrong.” I shrug.

“It’s cool. I won’t be here long. I was just curious,” she says. She looks me in the eyes. “Don’t freak out. I know you and Bishop said I could stay as long as I want, but I’m not trying to cockblock you. You guys are newlyweds.”

“It’s fine. There’s plenty of room here.”

“Yeah, I’m not about to be here with you and your new husband. I already booked an Airbnb. We can hang whenever you’re free, but I’m going to get out of your hair.”

“Isha.” I pout.

“I’m thinking about making some changes. I need the time and space. Don’t worry about me.”

“Fine. When are you leaving?”

I’m more anxious about the answer than I let on. I thought I would have her here to distract me until Bishop gets back. He still has to go right to work on recording when he does return.

I was hoping I’d have Isha here to keep me company. Under different circumstances, her actions would be my own. Still, I wish she was staying.

“In the morning. Your bodyguard said he could drop me off,” she says with a wince.

“My car is in the garage. You can take it,” I offer.

“I’ll think about it,” she says.

We fall into silence. I pick at the label on my drink. My mind wanders to my parents, but I quickly close the door on that so I don’t burst into tears.

“I’m happy for you,” Isha says, drawing my attention from my thoughts.

“Thanks.”

“It’s all going to work out. Parents don’t always know what’s best. Mine aren’t too happy with my latest choices, but I’m grown. It’s my life. I’m doing what makes me happy,” she says.

“What’s going on?”

“I—”

“Hey, Saga,” Dwayne’s voice booms through the house. “Bishop is freaking the fuck out. Where’s your phone?”

“Oh shit.” I giggle. “Hold that thought.”

“Go see what your man wants.” She snickers.

Bishop

“Did Isha get settled okay? Dwayne said her flight was delayed, but he found her,” I say nervously into the phone.

I pace my dressing room as I talk to my wife. I was losing my shit when she wasn’t answering her phone. I thought she decided to take off and leave me after all.

“She’s fine. We were just talking. She’s going to an Airbnb in the morning,” she says sadly.

“Babe, she can stay with us. She doesn’t have to leave.”

“I told her that. She wants to go. Don’t worry about it. What time is your show?”
