He swallows, his eyes searching mine before a goofy grin moves over his lips. “I mean, I’m not going to say no.”

We laugh at that as he wraps his arms around my waist, holding me closer. I move my hands up his chest, rubbing my thumbs along his pecs. He trails his lips along my temple as we let the water flow down around us. I think we both know that when we leave this bathroom, the real world is waiting for us.

“Quinn.”

“Hm?”

“You said you haven’t slept with anyone in a year.” I feel him tense up, and I let my eyes close. He’s not going to answer this—or he’ll lie. I swallow past the lump that forms as I ask, “Have you not slept with Ava?”

He hesitates for only a moment. Then against my temple, he answers, “No.”

Not sure what to say to that, I whisper, “Oh.” But I do know what I want to say. I want to ask a million questions, but I don’t want to push him away. I don’t want to rush him into anything. I want him to tell me because he wants to. I know I made this harder for him—I do that well—but I’d fully expected him to tell me what is going on by now. Yeah, we’ve been fucking for the last eight hours, but still. We took breaks. We had snacks. Surely he’s thought about what he’s going to do about this fiancée issue.

He tips my face up, our eyes locking as he rubs his thumb along my jaw. “I…I—” His words break off, but I don’t miss the trepidation in his gaze. “I don’t regret anything that happened between you and me, okay? I want this. I want you.” I don’t trust myself to talk, so I only nod. “But I’ve got to tell her, and I’ve got to figure out what the hell I’m going to do with all that.”

“I can come with you.”

He shakes his head. “Your name intimidates her, baby. Your being there will amplify everything, and I don’t want to expose you to her. Just let me deal with her.”

“Let me help.”

He traces my lips with his thumb. “I made this mess. I have to clean it up.”

“But I want to help.”

He smiles before he presses a kiss to my nose. Then he trails one finger along my cheek before kissing my lips. He doesn’t move his body, but he pulls back a bit, his lips lingering on me as his gaze burns into mine. My heart stutters at the sight—the longing, the fear, the need for me.

But most of all, the love.

He looks at me as if I’m the cure for all his problems, when, really, I’m the reason we’re here.

I cup his jaw as he whispers, “I know, and I love you for that. But let me handle it.”

My eyes search his. “Quinn, don’t let her push you around. Use your big dick energy. Take control the way you do when you’re between my legs.”

His brow pops, but he chuckles deeply as he glides his thumbs over my jaw. “My big dick energy is only for you,” he says, nibbling on my bottom lip. “But I hear you, and I’m going to fix this.”

I want to believe him, but I’ve got this awful feeling that she owns him in a malicious way. Not like how I lovingly own him. I lean in, wrapping my arms around his neck to bring him down to me. I kiss his nose then his top lip. “I’m madly in love with you.”

His lips curve slightly, his eyes dark and wanton. “Don’t ever question how much I love you, Em.”

“I don’t,” I promise. But of course, me being me, I pop a brow at him. “But you best not choose her over me.”

“I can’t,” he admits in a whisper. “I won’t.”

His eyes tell me he means his promise. But something doesn’t feel right.

I don’t say that, though. I kiss him because, no matter what, I will make sure we have forever.

Chapter

Thirty-One

Quinn

When I come out of my bedroom, where my sheets are tangled and smell of Emery, I find her at the counter packing me a lunch. I smile as I set my backpack on the couch and watch her pack some almonds in a baggie. She’s only wearing one of my gray button-up shirts, looking like a tumbled mess of sex with a mischievous grin on her face. When she looks up at me through her thick, dark lashes, my cock throbs for her.

Fuck, I don’t want to leave her.

“Even though I’m not a fan of your job choice, I have to say, you look really hot in scrubs, Dr. Adler.”

My lips twitch as I move behind her, wrapping my arms around her waist and pressing my front to her back. I kiss the top of her head. “If this is your uniform for work, I may have to change fields.”
