“That’s not in his hands to control,” she cried.
Fuck, she was killing me.
I hated seeing her cry.
I tightened my arms around her until I was sure her ribs were going to crack, but she only snuggled even closer to me, seeking the slight pain that came with my comfort. It kept her grounded so she didn’t get lost in her head and all of the possible what-ifs.
“He’ll make it something he can control,” I assured her. “Believe in him, sweet girl. He needs you to believe in him and believe him when he says he’s coming back home to you. And I have his word that if you want to skin him alive when he comes home, he’s looking forward to it.”
A watery laugh spilled past her lips. “I hate him so much sometimes,” she confessed in a whisper. “I hate that he makes me worry so much all the time.”
“Love him or hate him, sweet girl. He’s yours either way.”
She sniffled and nodded her head. “I know,” she rasped, her fingers clinging to my cut.
I brushed my lips to her cheeks, wishing there was something I could do to take away her worry so she didn’t feel like this. But all I could do was just hold her together and be by her side as much as possible until Alejandro could come back home to her.
CHAPTER SEVEN
Alejandro
Two weeks.
I had to be without Elaina for two weeks.
It had been two weeks since I held my son, took care of him, or talked to him.
Three days after I made the phone call to Joey to ask for him to put protection on Elaina, I had to go radio silent. I knew he understood why. But that didn’t mean Elaina fully understood. And even if she did, it didn’t mean she didn’t worry and obsess over me.
Neither me nor Joey could even go to the damn store down the street from the clubhouse without her worrying about us.
But I was finally coming home. And I didn’t plan on leaving for a long time.
The sun was just beginning to break over the trees when I pulled through the gates of the Sons of Hell’s property. The doors opened, and Elaina stepped outside, Joey right behind her.
Fuck. I was hoping she’d still be asleep. She didn’t need to see me like this. I hadn’t even gone to my home in Mexico before coming home to get a shower. I was covered in dirt and blood—a fucking mess. The only reason border patrol hadn’t said anything was because they knew exactly who I was.
They also knew what I was capable of. All of them did. And they also knew I had my fingers in everyone’s pockets, including the president himself. There was no sense in arresting me. It would just be a waste of paperwork for them that would mysteriously go missing anyway.
I sighed as I stared out my windshield at Elaina while I lowered my fingers to press the button to turn the SUV off.
There was no hiding from her—not now. I knew nothing Joey could say to her would get her back inside that clubhouse.
Blowing out a harsh breath, I shoved open the door and stepped out, exhaustion weighing on my shoulders. I needed a hot shower, maybe a hot bath after with some Epsom salt, and then I wanted to crash into bed. I didn’t even have the energy to fuck Elaina like I normally would.
Her hands flew up to cover her pretty lips as soon as I shut the door and she was able to see all of me. Tears welled in her eyes. The sight of them made my chest ache, and a need to destroy whatever was upsetting her rose in my chest, even if that something might be myself.
This was exactly what I hadn’t wanted. She didn’t need to fucking see me like this.
“Little one,” I rasped as I made my way to her. She squeezed her eyes shut. She knew as well as I did that some of the blood was mine. There was no hiding the gash on my forehead, nor the bullet graze on my shoulder. But we’d taken the uprisers out, and I was home now.
She was safe. Our son was safe. That was all I’d ever wanted. They’d stupidly put out a hit on her, too, but I slaughtered every fucker who dared to even try to take the job before I could get it taken down off the site.
And from there, we tracked them. They were stupid enough to leave a trace. They were admittedly impressive until that dumb move.
“What happened?” she croaked, stepping closer to me.
I kept my hands to myself, not wanting to dirty her skin while I looked like this. “Let me get a shower, little one, and I will tell both of you everything,” I assured her.
