“Let me show you your present,” he says. “Maybe we can fuck on it.”

“Kayden,” I say, swatting at him. “Don’t be a dick.”

He chuckles as he drags me out of Renaldo’s place and outside. The snow is coming down hard. He bypasses a few sports cars and comes to a black, suped up Range Rover.

“Surprise,” he says, mashing the buttons and making the lights blink. “She’s all yours.”

“A chopped car?” I ask.

“Someone else’s trash is our treasure.”

“It’s not their trash if you steal it from them.”

He snorts out a laugh. “The dude we took it from has bigger shit to worry about.”

“Like what?”

“Like the fact your old boyfriend set his house on fire.”

I freeze at his words. “What?”

“Like you don’t know what Jordy does for my brother now.” He smirks at me. “Jordy starts the fires and your brother puts them out. How’s that for fucking hilarious?”

I want to choke him in this moment.

“That vodka is making me feel sick. Can you take me home?”

He frowns. “Wait. Baby, I’m sorry. I was just joking about Jordy being your old boyfriend. I know you hate that jealous shit. Please don’t go. I did all this for you.” He waves at the bumping party behind him and then at the car.

“I know,” I squeak out. “You’re so sweet. I really don’t feel good. Hollis and I had steak earlier. Must have not settled right. I feel like I’m going to puke.”

His irritation morphs into worry. “Yeah. No big deal. We’ll go out on a date soon and I’ll give you your other birthday present.”

“What’s that?”

“I’m going to lick your pussy and give you your first orgasm.”

My cheeks burn red hot. Over the past several months, we’ve made out and he’s dry humped me with his hand up my shirt, but that’s as far as I’ve allowed it to go. I certainly didn’t ever come with him. All I can think about is the last time someone else made me come.

Him.

Jordy.

“I, uh, Kayden, don’t be gross.”

He laughs. “Trust me. It’s going to be all kinds of nasty. I’m going to eat you out for days, baby, until you can’t walk anymore. I’ll wear your scent all over my face.”

I somehow manage to drag him to his car. We make it home in one piece. After a long, annoying make out session, I manage to untangle myself from him. It’s after two in the morning before I finally crash.

I wake to shouts.

Panic.

Terror.

Scrambling, I rush to my bedroom door and fling it open. The front door to the apartment is standing wide-open, snowy wind billowing in. Hollis and Jordy, both in just their boxers, share matching horrified looks.

“What?” I demand, rushing over to the door.

Roan peels out of the driveway in his truck, slipping every which way in it. Whirling around, I slam the door closed and turn toward them. Jordy is already approaching me with his blanket. It’s then I realize I’m only wearing a T-shirt and panties. He wraps me up in the blanket and I give them both a questioning look.

“What just happened? Where did Roan go?”

“He got called out,” Hollis croaks.

“For work?” I ask.

Jordy’s hand splays on my back over the blanket. “Yeah.”

“So? That always happens. What aren’t you telling me?”

Jordy presses his lips to the top of my head. “Mike said it’s Sidney and Gio’s address.”

My legs give out beneath me, sending me and Jordy falling to the floor. He pulls me to him, rocking me.

“It’s going to be okay,” Jordy whispers.

The sounds coming from Hollis—tearful and pained—tell me it’s not.

“Sebban.”

“Shh,” Jordy murmurs. “Shh, Little Hoodlum.”

Jordy

Renaldo.

All I can think about is the fact that Renaldo has pulled another shit move to get back at me. But how could he possibly know that Sebban is Roan’s kid? And what purpose would it serve to torch their fucking house? I’ve been Renaldo’s bitch without complaint. Set every single one of those goddamn fires for him.

It. Makes. No. Sense.

It’s been hours of waiting since Roan blew out of here. Roux let me move her to the couch where her head’s been in my lap. I stroke her hair, wishing I could fix everything with a snap of my fingers. Hollis gets a call and he leaps up from the other end of the couch, disappearing into his room.

A few minutes later, Hollis returns with tears in his eyes.

“What is it?” I demand, my voice hoarse.

“T-They’re dead,” Hollis chokes out.

Roux sits up, shrieking. “Who?”

“Gio and Sidney.”

Guilt consumes me and I close my eyes, willing the urge to throw up away. I never liked Sidney. Never. Doesn’t mean I wanted her or the nerd to die.

“How?” Roux demands. “And…”

Sebban.

Hollis clears his throat and sniffles. “They, uh, they died from carbon monoxide poisoning. It was a freak accident.”

I snap my eyes open. “It wasn’t a fire?”

“No, man,” he mutters.
