“Rocket, this is part of my job as VP.”
“Sometimes. Sure. But you did your part this time. Let the guys and Venus finish this.”
Her eyes widened. “Venus. Where is she? She’s got someone after her and I need to help her find the son of a bitch.” She pushed off the couch and tried to hurry to the door, but I snagged her arm and brought her back to me. I pulled her onto my lap so she straddled my thigh, my hand gripping her ass through the boxers she wore. “What are you doing? Let me up.”
“Nope. Not this time. Besides, Venus is already gone.”
“What? But Piston claimed her! She can’t leave!”
“Piston went with her. They’re headed to find the man after her. Victor Zaitsev. He’s a Russian mob boss and the father of Venus’s half sister. She suspects he wants his daughter back.”
Her eyes got wide. “Russian Mafia? Holy shit!”
I chuckled and pulled her in for a hug. “Yeah, sourpuss. Venus has ties, however loose, to Bratva.”
“When you say ties, it seems like you’re implying she was part of it. Not just that her half sister’s father is part of it.”
“That’s because I am. She’ll have to tell you the details when she gets back, but I got the sense she used to be some kind of enforcer before she broke free.”
“Wow. The more you know, eh?”
I chuckled. “Yeah, I guess so.”
“What about the guys in the dungeon?”
“Taken care of. I don’t want you thinking about them anymore. It’s done.”
She sighed and draped herself over my chest, tucking her head under my chin. “You take away all my fun.”
“I’d say I’m sorry but I’m really not.”
“Has someone checked on Gina today? And where’s Effie?”
“Falcon’s been with them most of the day. Effie and Gina are settling in well. Effie wants to see you tomorrow. I thought you and I would go with Falcon, Gina, and Effie to Tito’s. Tito called Byte several times, checking on you. You made an impression on the whole group. You think you’ll be up for a small trip?”
“Absolutely.” She grinned just as her phone trilled.
I leaned over to pick it up from the end table and looked at the screen. “Your sister. Wanna take it here?”
“Sure. Though, my face…” She brushed a hand over the bruised side.”
“Let them fuss over you. Want me to leave?”
“Nope. You stay here so you can protect me when Danica goes ballistic.”
I couldn’t help chuckle.
“Oh, my God! Lemon, what happened?” Apple’s hands flew to her own face the second she got a good look at Lemon. “Dani! Lemon’s been hurt!”
“Christ, Apple! Don’t do that!”
That’s when I saw Apple smirk. “Docile one, my ass,” I muttered.
“Lemon! God! That’s it,” Dani said, her face a whole ass novel of distress. “You’re coming home. That man obviously can’t take care of you. Wylde! We’re going to Riviera Beach. Right fucking now!”
“Dani, calm down.” It was kind of amusing as shit to watch Lemon trying to deal with her sister. I also made a mental note not to let any of the brothers decide they were taking a liking to Apple. I knew she had a man who’d said he was claiming her, but they’d yet to make it official. Lemon was starting to wonder what the fuck was going on. “Rocket takes care of me fine. Besides. I don’t need anyone taking care of me. And you should see the other guy.”
Dani gave me a hard stare. “What happened, Rocket?”
“Mistaken identity. Trust me when I tell you that, by the end of the whole affair, they wished they’d never laid eyes on Lemon, let alone taken her.”
I heard Wylde in the background before his face appeared in the screen. “Makin’ new friends, Lemon?”
“All kinds. It’s a blast here.” She grinned. “Danica just got her panties in a twist because of one slight misunderstanding.”
“Slight misunderstanding.”
“Yeah. He misunderstood the fact that facial piercings make wonderful targets when you piss off a person who isn’t squeamish.” Even Dani smiled at that quip, though she had to duck her head to cover it.
“I think I need to come to Grim Road to keep an eye on Lemon,” Apple said. “She’s obviously having difficulty staying out of trouble.”
Lemon’s face hardened for a second before she grinned at her twin. “Sure. The more the merrier. Besides, we’ve not had a girls’ night out causing havoc in more than a month. I feel the need.”
“Christ,” Wylde muttered, scrubbing a hand over his face. “Here comes the Top Gun reference.”
Lemon and Apple finished together. “The need. For speed.” Then the pair of them burst into giggles. This was a side of Lemon I had seen far too little of. She was an adult, but she still needed to have fun.
“Let her come if she wants,” I said to Wylde. “If Dani doesn’t have any objections, that is.”
