“She is, but Linc can’t expect her to keep chill about this. They’re getting married.” I shake my head in disgust. “I’m getting in the shower, and then I’m off to get my ass reamed by at least one Krause sister while the other is left to handle things on her own.”

I’m standing outside of the girls’ suite. I’ve raised my hand to knock three separate times, but each time I chicken out. I’m fucking exhausted and not in the mood to deal with getting my ass reamed because of my best friend. Knowing I can’t stand out here like a creeper all day, I raise my hand and rap my knuckles against their door three times.

“I’ll get it,” a voice calls out. When the door opens, I find Charlotte standing there.

Her dark auburn hair is pulled up in a messy knot on the top of her head. She’s wearing a tank top that shows off her tanned, toned belly, and the tiny scrap of material she’s wearing that she’s trying to pass off as shorts should be illegal. My eyes take their time roaming over every inch of her.

“If you’re done eye-fucking me, do you mind telling me why you’re standing at our door?” She crosses her arms over her chest, pushing her tits up, and my mouth waters.

Fuck, this woman is breathtaking.

“I need to talk to Audrey.” As if saying her name summons her, she steps up beside her sister.

“Hey, Spence.” She smiles at me.

I smile in return. “Hey, can we talk?”

“Sure, come on in.”

I hesitate. I want to ask her to step into the hallway, but I don’t know how she’s going to react, and as much as I want to avoid sparring with Charlotte, I’m guessing her friends and sister need to be here to calm her down.

Stepping into their room, I smile and wave at the other ladies. “So, I, uh, talked to Linc this morning.”

“Oh.” Audrey’s eyes light up.

Fuck.

“I tried to call him, but it went to voicemail. I figured he might be in a bad service area.”

“Yeah.” I reach up and grip my neck. “He’s not on his way,” I say, spilling the bad news as if I’m ripping off a Band-Aid.

“What?” Audrey asks. There’s shock in her tone. Of course she’s shocked. Her fiancé isn’t here. They’re getting married this weekend and he’s MIA.

“He said it’s taking longer than he thought to close the deal. I guess he tried to call you, but it went to voicemail.” I hold my breath, not sure how she’s going to react to the news.

“I forgot to charge it last night,” Audrey confesses. “Did he say when he would be on his way?”

“No.” I shake my head. “He said that he would call you when he was on his way.”

She nods, turning to look at her sister and her friends. “It’s fine. The rehearsal isn’t until tonight, anyway. He’ll be here in plenty of time.”

“Audrey.” Charlotte pulls her sister into a hug.

“I’m fine.” Audrey offers a wide smile for her sister before turning back to me. “Thank you for relaying the message, Spencer.”

“How are you so calm about this?” I ask her.

She shrugs, and as she turns to face me, she swallows hard before placing a smile on her face that doesn’t reach her eyes. “He still has plenty of time to get here. We’ll just carry on as we would, and then tonight we’ll have the rehearsal, then dinner after, and tomorrow we live happily ever after.”

“I expected tears and anger. Hell, even I got on him for not being on the road.” How is she being so calm about this? If that was my fiancée, I’d be pissed as hell at her. This is their time. He’s missing all of these moments with her. Hell, we’re not even doing anything, but he’s about to give her his last name and vow to love her for all eternity. He needs to be here for all of it. What’s the point of all of this if he’s not here? He could have just taken her to Vegas or to the fucking courthouse.

Audrey smiles softly, and it reminds me of her sister. “We both know how dedicated he is to his job. Is it bad timing? Sure, but it’s not the end of the world. Everything will work out.”

“What do you need from me today?” I ask her. I make a mental note to kick my best friend’s ass for putting me in this position. He should be here. There is no excuse that’s good enough. Not unless he’s hurt or injured, and he’s neither of those things.

“Charlie?” Audrey asks her sister.

“I have you down for verifying that the cake is all set with the resort bakery.”

“Done. Anything else?”

“Not that I can think of,” Charlotte replies.

“Do you ladies want to meet downstairs for brunch?”
