“I guess I just wanted us to hang out. I know you’ve been avoiding me, or Jax hasn’t been passing on my messages.”
“I’ve not been ignoring you. Not in the way you think.”
Lily smiled. “But you’ve been ignoring me.”
Dani winced. “I don’t tend to get on well with women. I don’t know what it is, but I’m not really good at the whole friends things. I’m used to being alone and just getting by. I’ve had people I’ve been friendly with, but it’s never been anything serious.”
Lily stared at her. “I want us to be friends. I’m going to be in Jax’s life for a long time. Ryan and I, we’re in love. Have been for a long time, but we’ve also held off. Our parents told us that getting married young was a mistake. That we’d regret it. So we held off. Both of us made careers, and now we’re starting a family.” Lily touched her stomach.
“Oh, wow, congratulations.”
“Yeah, it’s a pretty big deal.”
“It sounds it. Congratulations. Does Jax know?”
“Yeah, he does. Ryan can’t keep anything to himself. I wanted to tell someone. and seeing as you’re with Jax I didn’t want this to be weird.”
“It’s not weird. You don’t have to worry in the slightest.” She smiled
“Well, we want Jax to be the godfather. We’d think he’d make a terrific dad, and so I was wondering if you’d be interested in something like that.”
“Oh, you don’t know me.”
“You’re dating Jax. That’s enough for me.”
She nibbled her lip. “You do know that it might not work between us. This could all end up a mess.”
“I know Jax, and I know he’s never had a girlfriend before in his life. This is going to work. I saw the way he looked at you over dinner that night.”
“Lily, I don’t want you to get your hopes up.”
“You really don’t see it, do you?”
“There’s not a whole lot to see. We barely know each other.”
“The Jax I know and love is the guy that is still angry at his dad and hates love. He wouldn’t allow himself to fall for any girl. The love ’em and leave ’em kind of guy. He fucks who he wants and to hell with the consequences. I get it. I really, really do, but it’s not him on the inside. No matter how hard he tries to deny it. There’s a man inside him that I think could be amazing. He’s loving. He’s loyal. Even when our parents were against me and Ryan, he wasn’t. I guess I just want you to give him a chance and us a chance. We’re pretty awesome.”
Dani smiled.
“I will try. That’s all I can offer you, and yes, I’d love to be a godparent to your child.”
“Good. Let’s eat, because I’m starving.”
Chapter Ten
“There are three different kinds of movies to pick from. An action one, a sappy love story, or a horror,” Jax said. He had a bottle of pink nail polish, and he spread a layer on Dani’s toenails.
They were having a weekend together. No work. No friends. No other commitments other than cleaning their apartment. They got done with the kitchen earlier. Tomorrow was the main sitting room, then their bedrooms. Not that it would take them long.
“I don’t mind. Put on what you want.”
“I’m thinking horror, action, sappy love story.”
“Are you doing that order because you’re hoping to get lucky at the end?”
“Do we mean foreplay lucky?”
“Yes, I mean foreplay lucky.”
“I don’t suppose I can throw in a porno then?” he asked.
She raised a brow. “Well, well, well, Jax King has a stash of porn, who would have thought it.”
“I have a lot you don’t know about.”
“I’m starting to see that. I’ve never seen much porn.”
“You’ve not?”
“Nope. I don’t know why. It just didn’t appeal.” She wrinkled her nose.
He finished the last coat of polish, put the brush back into the bottle, and blew on her toes. “Then you’re in for a treat. I refuse to let you go another day without watching some porn.”
She burst out laughing. “Come on, Jax, are you serious?”
“Every guy has to have a stash of porn.”
He walked into their bedroom and went to the back of his closet. The supply was under a couple of boxes, and as he drew them out, he saw they were a little dusty and there was even a cobweb.
Grabbing out one of the DVDs, he returned, holding it up.
“Wow, a woman completely naked with her legs spread. How … original.”
“This was all juicy back then. You have got no idea how much I loved pussy. I used all of this as a guide.”
“So why did you treat them like crap?”
“It helped to make them leave. I wanted to fuck them, not let them stay.”
“Wow.”
“I’ve been good. I’ve not been with anyone else since before we were dating.”
