Khadar changed back into human form and ran forward to investigate those two figures. Bearing crossbows and bolts in quivers on their backs, the men had decorated themselves with leaves and twigs. Disguised from view, the tree had provided cover, but the sound had eliminated them in a split second.
“What is going on?” Khadar wondered aloud.
“The organization of this attack is concerning. It was deliberate in the attempt to injure dragons with whatever was in that smoke. And to shackle people together to make it look like a kidnapping?” Oldrik shook his head in disbelief.
“I agree, Oldrik. Whoever devised this attempt to lure us in is trying to eliminate dragons,” Ardon stated. His face was chiseled in anger.
“We need to find out what’s in that smoke. And, even more important, who knew that it would affect dragons? Oldrik, what did it do to you?” Khadar asked.
“I inhaled on the way into the cloud and got some of that in my snout. Instantly, I felt disoriented, like I didn’t know which way was up and down. Landing was a problem. It felt like I was soaring upward,” Oldrik explained. “I concentrated on one tree and used that to guide my landing. Thank you, Ardon. I can’t image what effect prolonged exposure would have had.”
“I saw you rotate and knew something was wrong,” Ardon told him.
“We need to find out what’s in that smoke,” Khadar stated firmly.
“There is a chemist in town. He’s concentrated on emergency medicines, but I’m sure he’d run some tests for us,” Oldrik shared.
“Let’s do it. Look around for something we can use to transport a sample. Then we’ll burn this from a distance,” Khadar suggested.
Within a short time, Oldrik created long tongs from branches and vines. He maneuvered two of the small bundles from the disguised “victims” and placed them in a nested set of plastic containers holding food for the attackers.
“I’ll carry it back to Wyvern,” Oldrik volunteered. “I know where to find the chemist.”
“Let’s do this as quietly as possible,” Ardon suggested.
“The horde needs to know,” Khadar stated firmly.
“Definitely. Humans on a need-to-know basis,” Oldrik agreed.
After scouting the surrounding area for any additional chemical bags, Khadar and Ardon cleared the brush around to create a firebreak. Khadar was glad he wasn’t alone to tromp through the woods in dragon form, knocking down all the vegetation to the dirt like a dragon-shifter demo.
Be a dragon, they said. Live a glamourous life.
Khadar couldn’t keep from snorting at Ardon’s joke. Just a few more yards and they’d have enough done to torch the area before returning home. After that close call, he needed to hold Lalani.
Chapter 9
Dragon business?
Rolling her eyes as she yawned, Lalani stretched, trying to wake up completely. She hated to admit it, but she felt better after the nap he made her take. Her clothes had disappeared from her dresser where he usually put them. She’d have to pick out something new.
Pushing back the covers, she walked to the closet with her arms wrapped around herself. According to Khadar, she slept better naked. There was no arguing with him. He’d just pull the Daddy card—Daddy makes the decisions.
It was tough choosing clothes. Already, she had gotten spoiled by Khadar deciding everything for her. It was so much easier to enjoy all the fun things without having to worry about all those adult things. Bills, cooking, laundry, cleaning… Those were definitely not Lalani’s favorite things to do.
Khadar had created a list of chores for her to do. They were on a big board in her nursery. Each day, she got a checkmark or an X. Lots of checkmarks earned her a reward. Her face heated at the special rewards she had received. Too many Xs and she either had to stand in the corner or have some other punishment.
Her eyes darted to the silvery butt plug that sat on the dresser with a tube of lubricant. Khadar had declared her bottom training would begin tonight. She couldn’t imagine that going into her. Maybe he was just kidding?
Pushing her hand down into the front of her leggings, Lalani tried to convince herself that the thought of him pushing that device into her bottom did not turn her on. The slickness her fingers discovered proved she was. Lalani stroked through her pink folds. Tingles of pleasure gathered as she caressed herself.
Could he tell if she…? Lalani looked at the nursery bed and debated if she could lie back on the pillows to make herself climax. Maybe just a quick one?
She shook her head. He’d know.
She pulled her hand from her pants and wiped her juices onto her leggings before running over to the bed to make it and tuck Lettuce in. She needed to earn a reward tonight. Her body craved Khadar’s masterful touch.
A shiver of something evil slid down her spine, making her push her desires away. Something was wrong. Malevolence seemed to hover around Khadar. Was he okay?
