“Everything at your speed, Zara,” he promised. “Would you like some food and coffee now?”
“Yes, please.”
Chapter Five
Zara’s mind was spinning with possibilities as Kestrel turned her slightly, angling her body on his lap so she could reach the table. He dragged her coffee closer. “You need to eat, Little one.”
She picked up the mug and took a sip. It had cooled off, but not too badly.
“Cold?”
She shook her head. “No. It’s just right. I don’t like to burn my mouth.” She took another sip, set the cup down, and eyed the danishes. “Maybe I could eat something.” Suddenly, her mouth was watering. The pastries looked like they might fall apart in her mouth. The fruit also looked fresh and delicious.
Kestrel picked up a blueberry and brought it to her lips.
She hesitated but then opened her mouth and let him pop it in. It was perfectly ripe. “Mmm. Those are so good.”
He offered her another.
She giggled, shocked by the sound of laughter coming from herself. “You don’t have to feed me, Kestrel.”
“Ah, but I enjoy feeding you. I’m going to enjoy doing lots of things for you.”
“Is that in the bodyguard description? You’re supposed to sit me on your lap and feed me?”
He chuckled. She loved the sound and the way it vibrated through her body. “Those things and many more are not in the bodyguard handbook. They’re in the Daddy handbook.”
“Mmm. And you think you’re going to be my Daddy,” she murmured.
“I know I am. But don’t let me rush you. You take your time figuring it out.”
“You don’t want to rush me, but you want me to move in with you today?”
“Yep. Immediately. That doesn’t mean I’m going to take you to my bed. I won’t do something like that until you’re sure you’re ready.”
“How chivalrous,” she said sarcastically.
He shocked her when his hand lifted from around her to her waist and tickled her, making her buckle her body in that direction. “Hey!”
“Why do I get the feeling you’re going to challenge me every step of the way?” He was smiling.
She shrugged. “Probably because I am. I’m a skeptical person by nature. I’ve had to be. From the time I was aware, I’ve known that most people got close to me for their own gain. I’m slow to trust. I’ve had very few close friends in my life, and I never trust men.”
“Understandable. I will prove myself to you.”
“Are you always so bossy and confident?”
“Yes. Are you always so squirmy and pink-cheeked?”
She stiffened, not looking him in the eyes as she reached for a croissant.
He wrapped a hand around hers and drew their combined hands to her lap. “Humor me,” he whispered in her ear.
She shivered at his tone and the feel of his warm breath on her neck. What was he going to do now?
He managed to rip off a corner of the croissant and brought it to her lips.
She opened for him without overthinking things. The bite was delicious, but the scene was on fire. She never dreamed she’d be in a position like this. She was sitting on the lap of the most handsome man—a man she was attracted to—and he was feeding her. It was sensual and erotic. It made her feel as submissive as the heroines in her romance novels, especially the ones with Little girls and Daddies.
She didn’t protest as he continued to feed her. She sat very still and opened her mouth over and over like a baby bird. Every bite tasted better because he was the one feeding her.
When she was stuffed, she shook her head and turned her mouth away. “I’m full.”
He’d been feeding himself between giving her bites, and he popped that last one in his mouth, chewed, and swallowed before bringing his lips to her ear again and whispering, “I can’t wait for you to call me Daddy.”
She trembled in his arms as he wrapped them around her and held her close.
Zara felt like she had stepped into another dimension. She was outside of her body, living in a romance novel. This couldn’t be real. She also hadn’t thought about the human traffickers hunting her for over an hour. She hadn’t gone that long without letting panic seep in for weeks.
She needed to extricate herself from this situation before she said or did something embarrassing. “I should get to work.”
Kestrel picked up his phone, tapped the screen, and stared at her until someone answered. “Mark, it’s Kestrel. Zara is going to change positions. Will that cause you problems today?”
Kestrel held the phone between them on speaker. “Goodness, no. She did so much work yesterday that we have more than enough towels and sheets to restock the rooms today. The only thing she’d probably do would be to refold everything because she’s a perfectionist,” he said with a chuckle.
“Perfect.”
“Will you let her know I’m going to miss her? She was the best employee I’ve had. But I had a feeling she wouldn’t stay in the laundry room long. I’ll look forward to seeing her around the resort.”
