As soon as she entered the office, Billie rushed up to her, a huge, expectant grin on her face. “So, how did your weekend with Drew go?” she asked, her blue eyes filled with curiosity behind her black-framed glasses. “Where did he take you, and what did you do?”
Georgia laughed as her coworker and friend shot off the questions faster than she could answer them.
“The weekend was fantastic,” she said, starting toward the break room with Billie following behind, desperate for some caffeine to jump-start her morning. “And he took me to his family’s cabin in the Catskill Mountains.” As for how they’d spent their time together, she kept her summary PG-rated. “We went ziplining, he made me a steak dinner for my birthday, and we ate s’mores while he gave me a quick rundown of the basic constellations. It was a really fun weekend.”
Billie set her hands on her hips and narrowed her gaze while Georgia made herself a cup of coffee from the Keurig. “Why do I get the impression you’re skipping over all the good stuff?”
She laughed. “There was definitely good stuff,” she admitted, but didn’t elaborate. Those memories were for her, and her alone.
Billie settled a hip against the counter, still not done with her interrogation. “Okay, so when are you seeing him again?”
Trying to ignore the twist in her stomach that question evoked, Georgia instead focused on stirring cream and sugar into her coffee. “I, umm, it really was just a weekend thing,” she said as casually as she could muster while glancing back at Billie. “You know, him fulfilling his duties of the bachelor auction. He recently made partner at his firm, which doesn’t leave him with a lot of time for dating.”
Billie’s lips pursed in disappointment. “Well, that sucks.”
Georgia couldn’t agree more with Billie’s sentiment, but she refused to allow the situation to depress her. She picked up her mug and they headed back into the reception area of the office just as Aurora walked in the door, doing her best to hold on to a gorgeous bouquet of red roses in a crystal vase with one hand and her purse in the other. Her pregnant belly didn’t help matters, and the vase tipped precariously in the crook of her arm.
Billie rushed over to rescue the flowers before they slipped from Aurora’s grasp. “Oh, my God! If Nick insists on giving you flowers, the least he can do is have them delivered to the office so you don’t have to struggle with them.”
Aurora laughed as Billie set the bouquet down on the table near the couch in the reception area. “I would agree, but these aren’t for me. They were being delivered to the security desk downstairs when I walked in. The guard told me they were for Georgia, so I offered to bring them up since I was heading to the office anyway.”
Georgia’s heart skipped a beat, and Billie’s brows rose above the frames of her glasses as she turned her gaze to Georgia. “Well, maybe you completely misread the situation.”
Had she misinterpreted things? More than anything, Georgia wanted to believe that might be true, and the possibility had her heart beating wildly in her chest.
Billie plucked the envelope that had been tucked into the middle of the roses and handed it to Georgia with a flourish. “Why don’t you see what he has to say?”
Unable to contain her growing excitement, Georgia removed the card and read the message that had been written inside.
Georgia, happy belated birthday. I’ve been thinking of you and would love to take you out to dinner this week. Sincerely, Elliott.
Elliott’s unexpected note was like a splash of cold water, immediately dousing her hopes and anticipation that the flowers were from Drew—a definite womp, womp kind of moment.
“Who is Elliott?” Billie asked, wrinkling her nose in confusion as she peered at the card from next to Georgia.
Swallowing back her disappointment, she stuffed the card back into the envelope. “He’s an attorney who works at my father’s firm who has been trying to get me to go out with him.”
“I take it you’re not interested?” Aurora asked.
“Not in the least, and he’s not taking the hints I’ve been tossing his way.” She rubbed her fingers along her forehead and sighed. “It also doesn’t help that he works for my father, and my parents think he’s a great catch, which puts me right in the middle of an awkward situation.”
Aurora winced and absently rubbed a hand over her pregnant belly. “Yeah, that is an uncomfortable position to be in.”
But it was also one Georgia needed to address at some point soon, despite how much she hated any kind of conflict or confrontation.
Everyone went their separate ways, and Georgia headed to her own office and sat down at her desk. She took a drink of her now lukewarm coffee, knowing she couldn’t ignore the fact that Elliott had sent her the bouquet, and she needed to thank him.
