Diesel kicks the gun away and asks, “Who the fuck is that?” as he holds out a big beefy hand to me. “Come on, Willow. Let’s get you out of here.”
I nod slowly and let him pull me away from the dead body. I shake my head. “He came for me the other day, but I don’t know who he is.”
“Probably a soldier for Los Tres Colombianos, Willow.” Stone’s voice is thick with sympathy, and I have a feeling I really fucked up just now.
“I need to call Ace.”
Shit. “Am I in trouble?”
Stone shakes his head, and I grip Diesel’s hand for comfort. “No, but we need to get you girls out of here.”
Diesel turns to Maven and Letty while Stone talks to Ace. “Any of you all right to drive?”
Letty nods. “I’m shaky, but I can make it back to the clubhouse. My car is out back.”
“Good. We’ll keep you covered at the front and back. Let’s go.” He nods to Stone, and we all leave out the back door, leaving the smoking, fiery wreckage for now.
“Did I do the wrong thing?” My body shakes fiercely as questions pour from my mouth, one after the other. In my desire to stay alive, to keep my friends alive, have I started something the club can’t finish?
“I’m sorry. I wasn’t thinking. What else could I do?”
I promised myself I would do whatever it took to stay alive after nearly dying in the hospital.
Now that I have done what it takes, I’m worried that I just stepped into some shit that the Reckless Souls or even Joaquin won’t be able to fix.
Chapter Twenty-Eight
Joaquin
“Willow, babe. Thank fuck you’re all right.”
As soon as she steps inside the clubhouse, I rush to Willow and wrap her in my arms. I don’t give a shit about the blood splattered on her face. She’s safe, and that’s all that matters. I pull back and take in her red, watery eyes.
“You are all right, aren’t you?”
She’s shaking, and tears still stream down her face, but she manages a smile for me. “Yeah. I’ll be okay. Joaquin, but I was so scared.”
“I can imagine,” I murmur in her ear, pulling her close to me. “You’re safe now.”
She pulls away and gives me an incredulous look. “Safe? I just killed a cartel dude. They’re going to come after me.” She starts trembling uncontrollably. “I’m going to die, Joaquin.”
“You’re not,” I say, but her body trembles so hard, and I see shock beginning to set in, so I know she’s not listening.
”It’s been fun.” Her words are muffled against my chest, but I know she’s trying to say goodbye.
“Dammit, Willow. Stop talking like that. I won’t listen to this.”
She pulls back with a sad smile on her beautiful face. Even in tears, she’s stunning. “Well, you have to listen now because this might be the last chance I get to say any of this to you.”
An impatient sigh escapes as she waits for me to argue, but even though I’m not going to let anything happen to her, I’m curious to hear what she has to say.
Willow continues, “Good. I want to thank you. For staying by my side while I healed, for helping bring me back to life, and not just literally. The time I’ve spent with you has been truly amazing. Thank you for sharing your mama’s chili rellenos with me, and thank you so fucking much, for the incredible sex. And finally, thank you for letting me fulfill my dream of being some hot biker’s sexy little biker babe.”
I laugh and pull her close. “You’re not dying, Willow. I won’t let you, and neither will the Reckless Souls.”
She shakes her head and swipes away some of her tears with a smile. “Don’t you understand, Joaquin? I don’t want to bring more shit to your door. If I hadn’t gone to Club Dynasty looking for Sandee, they might not even know who you guys are. This is my fault.”
I look around the clubhouse and see Wild Man holding Maven close and Shades doing the same for Letty. My brothers, soothing their women and keeping them safe. Same as me.
“Willow,” I whisper. “This isn’t your fault, and even if it was, we’ll protect you. I promise you that.”
She smiles up at me, blue eyes glittering like gems as she cups my face, a look of love so pure my heart literally fucking skips a beat. “Thank you, but I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“Too bad. That’s not how it works when you’re a biker babe, Willow. You do as I say when it comes to your safety. Period.” I kiss her forehead and wrap her in another hug to stop her from shaking. “Besides, I haven’t taught you how to ride yet. Remember?”
The clubhouse door opens, and Stone steps inside, looking around the room until his gaze lands on Ace.
