“Go,” she whispered, giving him a gentle shove. As he pulled away, she grabbed the collar of his T-shirt and tugged him close again. “Wait.” She kissed him. “I love you,” she whispered.
Fuck, those were the best goddamn words in the English language. His heart did a happy dance in his chest like some mushy hero in a romantic movie. “Love you, baby,” he said back, then gave her one more quick kiss before she released him.
“Make good choices, ladies,” he called out as he slipped out the door.
“We should be saying that to you,” Jo yelled back.
He grunted. He’d be making good choices all right. Good for him, good for Harper, and good for the universe, but not good at all for the fucker who’d hurt his woman.
Twenty minutes later, he stood over the piece of shit who’d stabbed him and attacked Harper. The guy didn’t look nearly as cocky now, bruised and bloodied.
“Looks like you had some fun without me,” he said to Spec, who was wiping blood off his knuckles.
“Yeah, sorry, brother. I wanted to wait, but Donny here is a mouthy fuck who wouldn’t shut the hell up, so I had to help him out.”
Donny was a stupid fuck. Pissing Spec off never worked out well.
Jinx grinned. “Not a problem.”
“So whatcha wanna start with? You wanna slice his arm? Stab him? Personally, I’d strangle the fuck outta him. Make sure he knows exactly what your ol’ lady was feeling.” Spec held a knife out in case Jinx chose that route, but he wasn’t here to get revenge for himself. This was one hundred percent about Harper.
“Hmm… I’ll decide in a second.” He crouched down.
At some point, Spec clearly broke the guy’s jaw. Probably when he’d mouthed off a few too many times. His left cheek had turned an ugly dark purple, and his mouth hung partially open at an unnatural angle.
“Not so chatty now, are you?” Jinx patted his cheek. Okay, it was more of a light slap.
A medium slap.
Donny’s head flopped to the side, and he moaned pitifully.
“Fuck you,” he slurred. A string of bloody drool dangled from the corner of his mouth. “She was begging for it. Fucking slut wanted my—”
Jinx saw red. Quick as a snake strike, he had his hands around the fucker’s throat. Jinx squeezed. Within seconds, Donny’s face turned eggplant purple. His eyes bugged, and he fought like a wet cat, clawing at Jinx’s arms. But Jinx was big and damn strong, so Donny didn’t stand a chance.
“Feel good? Just listen to you begging me for it.” He squeezed until Donny’s eyes rolled back, and he lost consciousness. “Oops,” Jinx said with a laugh as he released his victim. “Got a little overzealous.”
Spec snickered. “He’ll be back in a minute. Then we’ll have a nice chat about the rest of his shitty life.”
As Jinx stood, his knee popped, and his back twinged. “Damn, I’m getting too old for this shit.”
“Tell me about it. I’m in my thirties, but my body feels like it’s eighty most days.” Spec nudged Donny with his foot but didn’t get a reaction. Still out cold.
“I hear you. Guess that’s what happens when you live hard and party harder.”
Donny groaned. He blinked a few times before his eyes stayed open. The second the fog seemed to clear, he tried to scramble away, but Spec stopped him with a heavy boot on his sternum.
“Welcome back, baby. Hoped you’re enjoying your time with us because we own your ass now, Donny boy.” Spec reached over to a cart where he kept an assortment of supplies for such situations and grabbed a syringe with a nasty needle.
Jinx didn’t know what hell the shit was, but he never wanted to be on the wrong end of a single one of those items.
“Whoever you were loyal to before us, that’s over. You see, my club wants Lobo.” Spec leaned over Donny. “And you’re gonna help us get him.”
Donny’s eyes went to the needle and grew wide as saucers. He shook his head. “No. Don’t! I’ll do whatever you want.”
“Oh, I know you will.” Spec waggled the syringe. “This is just a little insurance. Our way of making sure we can find you at all times.”
“W-what is it?”
“Well, it’s a microchip, Donny.”
Jinx barked out a laugh. “We’re chipping our new pet?”
“You bet your ass we are. You know how awful it is to lose a pet?” Spec grunted. “Can’t have that happening. Hold ’im still for me, brother.”
Jinx gripped Donny’s shoulders as Spec readied the syringe. Donny fought the hold, but as before, he was no match for Jinx. Without any warning or countdown, Spec shoved the needle in the space between Donny’s shoulder and neck. Donny moaned, but the pain of it didn’t last nearly long enough to satisfy Jinx.
“Here’s how this is gonna go,” Spec said once finished. “You answer to Jinx now. He calls, you come running. You do whatever he asks whenever he asks to keep my club happy. If we’re not happy, your sad life will end. It’s all very simple.” He placed the syringe back on his cart. “Got it?”
