I’d never been so confused in my life.

I wanted to go in there and jump his bones, but I also wanted him clear across the room at the same time.

I lingered in the bathroom, staring at myself in the mirror, procrastinating.

His voice came in through the crack in the door. “Baby, get your ass in here.”

A shiver moved down my spine as I closed my eyes.

“Come on.”

I turned off the light and left the bathroom, seeing him propped slightly up on his arm. His bedside lamp was still on, and his eyes followed me as I walked around the bed and moved to my side.

I wore silk pajama shorts and a t-shirt, my bra gone because my tits didn’t feel like being restricted tonight. I sat on the edge of the bed, my back to him, and turned off the lamp on my nightstand. My phone was there charging on the tray.

He curled his arm around my stomach and tugged me close, like the kraken pulled ships from the surface deep underwater. He pulled me to the center of the bed, turned off his lamp, and then pressed up against me, his chest to my back, his hard dick digging into my thigh through his shorts.

He crossed his arm over my chest and held me close, as close as we could be and still breathe. Then he went still, his face against the back of my head, the two of us sharing a single pillow.

He didn’t make a move.

He just lay with me.

“Goodnight, baby.”

I was relieved…but also disappointed. “Goodnight.”

I was in the study downstairs when Axel appeared in the open doorway. In a long-sleeved shirt and dark jeans, he looked like he was about to leave for the day. He left all the paperwork to me and did more of the physical stuff related to the business. His eyes were glued to mine as he walked around the back of the couch and approached me at the desk. “I’ll be gone most of the day.”

I didn’t ask where he was going or what he was doing.

He paused, as if he expected me to ask. When I didn’t, he moved on. “Call me if you need anything.”

“Alright.”

He didn’t turn away, like he had something else to say. “We’re having dinner tonight. Be ready at seven.”

“Another dinner party?”

“No, just the two of us.”

The invitation felt too heavy to be an innocent dinner. I knew there was more to it than that.

“And when we get home, we’re going to fuck.”

The heat that surged through me felt like a fiery comet. I stared, dumbfounded, offended and turned on at the same time.

He stared at me like he expected opposition, but when it didn’t come, he turned around and left the study.

I wore a black dress with pumps, a gold necklace around my throat. The walk-in closet had a mirror, so I put on my outfit there and checked it in the mirror before I stepped out. It was skintight and left little to the imagination—especially where my tits were concerned.

When I walked out, Axel was on the couch in black jeans and a collared button-down shirt, the sleeves pushed to his elbows like it was a hot summer day. He must have spotted me in his peripheral because he turned off the TV then stood up to face me. When his eyes landed on mine, he stilled and looked me over, from top to bottom, with intense slowness, as if he was undressing me without even touching me.

He came closer, walking up to me, coming so close our lips nearly touched.

I knew what he was going to say before he said it.

“I like that dress.” He pulled away, wearing that intense expression, and then that old smile came through, a smile I hadn’t seen often since we were married. His hand moved to mine, and he gently tugged me with him.

My heart was in my throat, and I was nervous like I’d never been, like I was about to lose my virginity all over again. The walk to the car was spent in silence, and the drive to the restaurant was spent in silence too. I wasn’t sure how I would get through dinner when all I could think about was how he planned to fuck me.

I could put an end to it and say no. He would listen and swallow his disappointment like a gentleman. But the desire clenching between my legs forbade me from saying no. Because it’d been a long time since I’d had a good lay, and despite what Axel had done to me, he would deliver. He always did.

After he pulled out the chair for me, he sat across the table and ordered the wine. The waiter handed out the menus then walked away so we could peruse the options.
