I don’t wait for her to answer before I release her and launch myself off the couch, charging for the door, but Maddy is there blocking me. She has her back to the door and her hand out as if she can stop me.
“I got away, Josh. I kicked him in the groin like you taught me. I escaped. He didn’t rape me, but yeah, he knocked me around a little. I just don’t know why someone from the trailers didn’t come out to help me. I was screaming as loud as I could. I know it was stupid to go to that area of town, but I thought I could trust the girl, and I really wanted to go to the party at the clubhouse.”
“Crater doesn’t have the right to fuckin’ breathe on you, let alone touch you.” I push her aside gently, but she gets back in my way.
Her chin is pointed up at me in that determined way she has as she refuses to move. “You’re not my brother or my protector, Josh. I refuse to let you go hunt down Crater who won’t be alone and get yourself killed.” She looks straight into my eyes and they tell me exactly what she’s thinking. “I love you and I have most of my life.” She lets her breath out like there’s been a weight lifted off her shoulders. “So if you think I’m just going to stand aside to let you get hurt or killed, you’ve got to be crazy because it’s not happening!”
Maddy is sexy as fuck when she’s riled up. Her eyes are wild, like she’s imagining me getting hurt, and I can see it’s killing her. With all the rage I’ve got pumping through me I feel it turn from anger to lust and desire. I have no control over myself, and I lean into her, capturing her mouth with my own. She winces in pain but doesn’t pull away, but I do. ‘I’m sorry. I hurt you,” I tell her in awe, rubbing my thumb across her lower lip.
“God, Iron, you have no idea. I don’t care about the pain. Just kissing you, being in your arms is more than I ever imagined.”
I stroke my fingers across her bruised cheek carefully. I believe what she’s saying to me. I know without a shadow of a doubt that she truly does love me. I’ve known for a while now, but I also know I’m no good for her. And I tell her so. “I want you so bad, Maddy. Fuck, you’re all I think about. But I’m no good for you.”
She’s shaking her head side to side. “But yes…”
I stop her, pressing my lips to her forehead and then pulling her back over to the couch and down onto my lap. She’s gone from ready to fight to now curling her body into mine and wrapping her arms around my neck. I take a deep breath, and worry creases her forehead. “Let me finish. I know I’m no good for you, Maddy. But I can’t stop myself, not anymore. I’ve wanted you for so long, but I want better for you.”
She does interrupt me then, tightening her hands on the back of my neck. “But there’s no one better than you, Josh. Please don’t push me away. I’ll do anything. I’ll be whatever you want me to be. I just want to be with you.”
“Don’t say that.”
She shrugs her shoulders. “It’s the truth. I know I’m not the kind of girl you want. But I can be what you need… and maybe eventually what you want.”
I shake my head, hating that it’s because of me she has these crazy thoughts in her head. “Don’t say that. Are you not listening to me? You are everything I want. You’re all that I need. I was lying to you yesterday, Maddy. I want to be with you.”
Her smile is blinding. “Fuck!” I inhale deeply. Hearing the desperation in her voice tells me that she’s as into me as I am into her. I can’t let anything come between us. Not now. “Crater isn’t the kind of guy to start something he isn’t going to finish.”

Maddy
He’s warning me, but I already knew it. I knew that Crater wouldn’t let it pass. “I know,” I tell him.
“You’re coming back with me to the clubhouse until this is resolved. Crater will have to come through me and the Exiled Guardians to get to you.”
I’m thrilled he wants to protect me and bring me back with him. I pack a few things, but I don’t have much in the way of biker gear.
While I throw things in a bag, Iron calls my dad. I hear him give the details of what’s going on. I have no idea what my dad says to him, but I can imagine he’s freaking out. I’ve always been a daddy’s girl. I hear Josh say, “Yes, sir.” “I do, sir.” “I promise you, sir.” And then he brings me the phone.
