A few hours later, I touch down in New York. After a mad scramble through the airport and a nerve-racking taxi ride through the breathtaking city, I find my way to the apartment I’ve rented for the next few weeks as I wait for the semester to begin.
I spend the day unpacking and sourcing some groceries, terrified of turning on my phone and finding countless messages from him. I can just picture him now, wondering where the hell I am, if I’m okay, and terrified that he’s done something to deserve this.
By nightfall, I make my way around the apartment and shut off all the lights. I turn my phone on for a brief moment and do my best to ignore the slew of messages that instantly fill my inbox.
I send off a text to Mom to let her know I’m safe before opening a new message to him. A million thoughts go through my mind of what I should say, but nothing seems enough. I know he’ll never forgive me for leaving him like that, with no goodbye or a chance to fight for me. But had he known my plans, he would have tried to stop me, and I undoubtedly would have stayed. So I type the one thing that also says the million other things that I can’t.
Cassie - I’m sorry. Forgive me.
I hit send and immediately turn my phone off before lying down in my big empty bed, in this strange apartment, feeling more alone than ever before.
Big, fat tears begin pooling in my eyes as my heart aches, wishing those arms that have held me every night for the past few years were here with me now.
What have I done?
Chapter 1
CASSIE
Pulling my yellow VW Beetle into a parking space outside the senior girls’ dormitory, I let out a shaky breath. I can’t believe I allowed my dimwit brothers to talk me into this. I turn off the ignition and step out of my car, making sure to grab my handbag and room assignment papers.
A massive, black Dodge RAM pulls up beside me, filled to the brim with my belongings, and all three of my moronic brothers jump out to meet me on the sidewalk. Each graces me with their own version of an encouraging smile. Though honestly, it makes them all look constipated.
“Do I really have to do this?” I whine to Sean, Logan, and Carter, feeling as though I’m about to crumble.
“Sure do, kid,” they say in unison, some ridiculous triplet telepathic voodoo shit.
“Fine,” I huff, taking off down the pathway toward what will be my home for the next year as an intense nervousness builds within me. “We may as well get this shit over with.”
“That’s the spirit, little sis,” Logan grins, jogging up the pathway to catch up to me while throwing his heavy arm over my shoulder.
“Ugh,” I groan, shrugging out from under him. “Get off me, you manwhore. Who knows where your hands have been.”
Logan pulls me in closer, tucks my head into the crook of his armpit, and makes sure I get a nose full of manly BO while using his other hand to give me a noogie. I shout for help while I reach around him and latch onto his man titties, giving a devastating nipple cripple as he squeals like a pig in mud.
“Will you two quit it?” Sean scolds, wheeling my suitcase behind him, not bothering to look up at our display. “You’re acting like a couple of delinquent kids.”
Logan lets out a huff. “She started it,” he grumbles under his breath and reluctantly lets me go so he can rub his man titties back to health.
Knowing I’ve won this round, a triumphant grin tears across my face, but I don’t get the chance to brag before Carter pushes his way between us and jolts my body to the side. “I can’t wait to get a look in here,” he grins, rubbing his palms together like a major creeper.
Rolling my eyes, I fix him with a hard stare. “I told you. You’re not screwing any of the girls I meet here.”
“Sorry, kid, but if a ten comes my way, you can guarantee I’ll be getting up in there,” he says, reaching for the door and ushering us all in.
I push in front of the boys and turn, bringing them to a halt as I give Carter a hard stare. “Promise me you’ll keep your dick in your pants.”
He begins to shrug off my warning when I pull out the puppy dog eyes, knowing he’ll cave like a little bitch. “Fine,” he mutters, making this my second triumph of the day.
Getting bored, Sean glances around at us all. “Can we get this show on the road? I promised Sara I’d be there to meet the wedding planner.”
“Okay, okay, no need to get your panties in a twist,” I grin as I turn on my heel and face down the place I’m dreading to call my new home. Taking a breath, I make my way down the hallway with my brothers on my heels. I scan the doors and give polite smiles to the passing girls until I come across lucky door number 12.
