It's stale.

I swallow it anyway because I can’t very well spit it into the trash.

He’ll think I’m disgusting even though the popcorn is disgusting and bland against my tongue.

“Should we jump on the bed like they do in the movies?” Drew wonders out loud, still sitting in his chair, not coming near me. It shocking how different the twins’ personalities are—how polite and considerate Drew is compared to his brother. Not that Drake isn’t considerate, he just does it in his own brooding way.

“If we jump on the bed it’s going to sound like we’re jumping on the bed, not having sex.” I bite into the apple, juice dripping down my chin. “It’s got to be driving him crazy wondering what we’re doing in here.”

“It’s one-hundred percent driving him nuts,” he muses. “Imagine what’s going through his head right now—he knows that I know I don’t actually know you, so it’s driving him nuts that I’m pretending I know you.”

Believe it or not, his sentence makes perfect sense.

My head tilts to the side. “Do you think I should pretend I have to go to the bathroom to see if he comes out of his room?”

“Should we take bets first to see if he comes out into the hallway?”

I nod. “Totally.”

“I bet he opens his door but doesn’t come into the hall.”

“You think?” It’s possible but not likely. “I bet he doesn’t open the door or come out at all. He’s too busy being traumatized.”

Drew stands, going to the door, cracking it open to peer out. “This is fun.”

He’s whispering.

I’m whispering. “Okay close the door and then when I re-open it, I’ll make plenty of noise.”

“But make it realistic.” Drew coaches me. “We don’t want to sound like we’re putting on a show.”

I snort. “This from the guy who suggested we jump on the bed?”

He laughs. It’s a laugh that sounds distinctly similar to his brothers yet very different.

“Ready?” My hand is on the doorknob, and I give it a slow turn. “Wait. Should I close the door behind me so it makes more noise?”

He nods. “Good call.”

Exhale. “Here we go.”

“Moment of truth.” Drew’s voice is hushed. “Go get ’em, Tiger!”

I pull the door open, step out into the hallway with a loud sigh, then slam the door behind me.

“Whoops!”

I stretch.

Yawn.

Saunter the few feet to the bathroom door on the left, standing in front of it for a few heartbeats.

Nothing.

Hm, okay.

I make a show of going inside and flipping on the light; step inside and close the door, standing in front of the sink because I don’t actually have to pee.

Look at myself in the mirror, then run the sink, leaning down so I can pat cold water on my pink cheeks.

Whew, is it hot in here or is it just me and my lies?

My eyes are shining, color high.

Hair down around my shoulders, I have just as much makeup on as I had on for my date with Drew—er, Drake—black mascara and lip oil make my mouth glossy.

I pucker.

Wait a few seconds before flushing the toilet.

Put soap and water on my hands to wash them because, hey—one can never be clean enough, and like I said, Drew’s bedroom is a bit of a mess.

I am not expecting to see Drake standing there when I finally pull the door open, his large frame filling his bedroom door as he leans, arms crossed.

“Oh, I’m sorry—I didn’t realize you were waiting.”

His head bobs. “It’s fine.”

He wants to say something. I can feel it as much as I can see it in his eyes, and the way he opens and closes his mouth.

“What?” I blurt out, wanting to hear it. “Am I in the way?”

I know damn well he doesn’t have to use the bathroom, and it looks like neither Drew or I are winning this bet, though he came closest.

“No, you’re good.”

Three-word answers.

Great.

I fiddle with the hemline of my shirt, more nervous than I should be. I am not the one who lied! What am I fidgety for, he should be the one afraid to make a move, not me!

“So. It was good to finally meet you,” I say at last. “Drew has said so much about you.”

His lips press together. “Oh, has he?”

It’s almost impossible for me not to narrow my eyes.

Considering he had no issues pulling this little stunt, he sure is reluctant to have a conversation with me. What did he think was going to happen? That his brother and I were going to meet by chance even though he’d orchestrated the entire thing, and he was just going to ignore me and my presence when I happened to be in their house? Did he actually think he could pretend he didn't know a bunch of random facts about me, or that we shared a kiss?

Did he actually think I wouldn’t notice the sexy gap is no longer between Drew’s middle teeth?
