“You don’t need to teach me anything,” I promise, my words as fast as my feet when I dump my mother’s freshly made scones onto the ground and race into his arms. “You will never need to teach me that as it is something I learned years ago.”
While kissing him with everything I have, I hold him as tightly as I should have three months ago. I refuse to let go because even if this is a dream, I don’t ever want to leave.
It feels perfectly right, but Caleb tries to up the ante even more. After dragging his thumbs across my wet cheeks, he places me back on my feet, curls his still shuddering hand around mine, then nudges his head to the open church doors. “Shall we?”
I consider his offer for barely three seconds before shaking my head.
The steps he’s taken today are mammoth, but not even Jesus learned to walk in a day.
When the day comes for him to no longer fear the things holding him, I will support him all the way, but that day will not be today because we have far more pressing matters to attend to—such as my overflowing tips jar.
“I’ve been saving up for years for a private performance, and since last night’s routine technically makes me a repeat customer, I say a discount is in order.”
While guiding me to a hired car parked half a block up, Caleb mutters, “I’ve seen your tips jar. It is nowhere near big enough to fund the perks you’re seeking.”
I ram my elbow into his ribs, doubling his sassy grin, before saying, “The fact you think I have to pay for perks shows how much of an asshole you are.”
Everything in the world seems right again when he murmurs, “Never denied it, Jessie. Never denied it.”
