“I do, too,” I say, some deranged part of me wanting to tell her that I love her too, and I always will. But she’s already skittish and I’m about to go on tour again. Now isn’t the time to start talking feelings or getting involved with the one who got away.
Genevieve is probably right. We should quit while we’re ahead, log this as a night to remember, and move forward as friends.
An hour later, after we’ve eaten scrambled eggs with cheese and made a batch of fresh popcorn to snack on while we watch “Elf” on the big screen in the living room upstairs, the vibe is almost back to normal. We laugh and share stories from her college years and my first world tour like no time has passed at all and there was never any weirdness between us.
But when she falls asleep on my shoulder before the end of the movie and I watch the fresh snow falling outside the window, I can’t help but think this is more than the end of our adolescent feud.
This feels like the beginning of something special, something that might change the course of both of our lives forever.
It should be a scary thought, I guess, but with my beautiful friend asleep on my shoulder and her body warm and perfect against mine, nothing seems too scary. This feels like a night I won’t ever forget, no matter how many Christmas Eves I’m lucky enough to share with Genevieve Frances Halloran.
And I have a feeling there will be a lot of them.
Maybe…all of them.
And if so, that sounds damned good to me.
