"Yes, you heard me right," she said patiently. "You really do have that many days off, and we also have four surgeons in reserve for emergencies. You've earned this vacation, so..." Joelle smiled slyly. "Go and enjoy it with your mysterious girlfriend!"
Adam's shoulders finally relaxed. "I will, thanks."
Joelle's eyes widened. "I was just joking!"
"I wasn't."
"Oh my God, so you really do have a girlfriend? Who is it—-"
Adam walked out of the clinic, and Joelle was left talking to an empty room.
Bliss.
It was a struggle not to grin like a fucking fool as he walked to the nurses' station. He could finally see Temptation again, and hopefully, once she learned how crazy the past few days had been, she would understand why he hadn't been able to send her even a single text.
It took about half an hour before Adam was done giving last-minute instructions to the nurses handling his patients, and it was upon walking back that he saw a girl stepping out of his clinic.
What the hell?
Adam froze in his tracks.
He would know those lovely dark eyes of hers anywhere.
What the hell was Temptation doing coming out of his clinic?
How the fuck had she found him, and had he just caught her doing the same thing as Ilona had done?
Twenty-One
It's far from my first time to come to Stanhope, but I think this is the first time ever that my stomach isn't curdling in fear as I cross its doors, and of course I have him to thank for this.
One of the receptionists behind the concierge desk greets me with a smile as I come up. "Hi. What can I do for you?"
I give the name of Io's old doctor, and the other woman nods right away.
"What's your sister's name?"
"Iolanthe Raptis."
She types my sister's name on the computer. "Oh, lucky her. And you. She'll now be under Dr. Adam Al-Masri." She opens a drawer and pulls out a business card. "Here you go. His clinic details, schedule, and contact information - everything's there."
"Thank you so much." I glance down at the card she's handed me as I turn away. Adam Al-Masri? I know Al-Masri is a really, really common family name in Huzna, but could Io's new doctor be related to Madeleine's fiancé?
Hm.
A sheikh who also happens to be a doctor?
Now, wouldn't that be yummy?
Not yummy of course as my doctor, and oh my God, did I really just call Dr. Somebody as mine right now?
Who knew I could be this possessive when in love?
The thought makes me want to cringe and smile giddily at the same time, and I'm still trying to make sense of my feelings by the time I finally reach Dr. Adam Al-Masri's clinic.
I knock on the door before letting myself in. "Um, hi?"
The girl behind the desk glances up, and I'm startled to find that she's only a couple of years older. "Hi there."
I tell her the same thing I've told the receptionist at the lobby, and the older girl looks at me apologetically. "I'm so sorry, but Dr. Al-Masri is on vacation."
"Oh."
"But if you leave me your contact information, I'll let him know about your visit, and maybe we can schedule another appointment once he's back?"
"Um, sure."
It takes only a couple of minutes to give her my contact details, and I take my phone out as soon as I leave Dr. Al-Masri's clinic.
Please, please, please let there be a new message from him.
But when I switch my phone on, my SFI inbox is still empty, and my shoulders slump.
Oh well.
I obviously can't be mad about this, but I do miss him so, and—-
Ouch.
I think I must've walked straight into a wall, but when I glance up, the first thing I see is a pair of familiar green eyes.
"D-Doctor Somebody?"
Twenty-Two
Adam didn't want to think his Temptation had anything similar with Ilona, but the way she was now feigning surprise upon seeing him just smacked of guilt.
Even so, he forced himself to smile and strove hard not to jump to any conclusions.
"Hello, Temptation."
Her cheeks turned pink, but Adam was no longer certain whether her blushes were genuine or not.
"So..." It was a struggle to keep his voice even. "How exactly did you find me?"
She shook her head with a laugh. "But I didn't."
He could see that she was expecting him to laugh or at least smile with her, but how the hell could he do that when she was fucking killing him with her lies?
He had known she was more of a thorn than a rose, but she was supposed to be a thorn that didn't fucking lie.
So why the hell was she breaking his heart by lying?
"I'm here to meet this other doctor—-"
"Enough." He didn't want to hear another word from her, ever.
She reared back at the abruptness of his tone. "D-Doctor?"
"I never want to see you again after this."
