When he collapsed onto the bed beside her, he drew her into his chest and held her tight.
Safe.
Loved.
Happy.
“Lucie Ann, what have you done to the living room?” Atticus demanded, coming into the room. He crossed his arms over his chest, giving her a stern look. “It looks like a bomb went off in here.”
“Daddy, it’s a war. The Vikings are fighting a battle against the Daleks and the prize is double chocolate brownies.”
“That makes no sense.”
“Imagination, Daddy,” she reminded him.
“And that’s why the living room looks like a bomb went off in it?”
“Yeah, Daddy, duh. They’re double chocolate brownies.”
“I don’t think I like the attitude in your voice, little girl,” he warned.
“Um, sorry, Daddy.”
“Have you finished writing lines?”
Uh-oh.
Apparently, he hadn’t forgotten about that second punishment for getting sassy with him. Because he’d set her the task of writing a hundred times that she would not sass her Daddy.
“I started it, Daddy, but then my hand started to cramp. So I decided to take a break. And then I got sidetracked.”
“Where is what you’ve written?” He held out his hand.
She glanced around desperately. Where was that darn piece of paper? Finally, she found it under Princess Pickles, who was lying on the sofa, looking bored.
“Here, Daddy!” She jumped up and handed it to him.
He rubbed at his eyebrow. “You’ve written ten lines.”
“Um, yeah. I got a cramp.”
“No. What you do have is too much attitude for someone who is owed a spanking.”
“What? Why am I getting a spanking?” She put her hands over her ass to protect it. “I don’t wanna spanking.”
“Then you shouldn’t have risked your safety by driving in a snowstorm. And you also should have finished your lines.” He held up the paper.
“Twenty-five spanks for risking your safety. Ten for not doing your lines.”
“No, Daddy! That’s not fair.”
“Keep arguing, little girl. We can make it more. I’m going easy on you since it’s your first spanking.”
That was going easy on her? She didn’t want to experience him going hard on her.
“Come here.” He crooked a finger at her. She walked over reluctantly. But all he did was draw her into his chest and hug her. “You know I love you.”
“I know, Daddy.”
“I just want you to be happy and healthy.”
“I know, Daddy.”
“And you know you deserve this spanking, right?”
She sighed. “I know, Daddy.”
“Then take off your pants and panties and go stand in the corner until I call you.”
What? Darn it. That sucked. But she didn’t argue. She drew off her pants and her panties. Then she went and stood in the corner. Her T-shirt was too short to cover her butt, which made it even worse.
After what felt like forever, he called out to her.
“Lucie, come here.”
Turning, she found he’d pulled a dining room chair into the messy living room. He gestured her over, and she moved reluctantly.
Without any hesitation, he drew her across his lap so her legs rested off to one side and her head hung down the other side. Then he rubbed her bottom. “What’s your safeword?”
“Peach.”
“Say it if you need to. The count is thirty-five.”
The first few were awful, and she didn’t know how she was going to survive. It felt like he was blistering her ass. She fought him. She pleaded. It wasn’t pretty, and she wasn’t exactly proud of herself for begging the way she did.
But darn it, the spanking hurt!
Then something happened. It didn’t become less painful, but it was like her body started to accept it. Her bottom burned. Tears slid down her cheeks. She lay limply over his knee as he continued to land smack after smack on her poor bottom.
“Ten more, baby. You’re doing so well.”
He moved his hand lower, smacking it down on her upper thighs. Oh hell. Oh crap.
She started to cry even harder. She barely even realized that he’d stopped until he shifted her so she sat on his lap, straddling his legs. Holding her against his chest, he rubbed his hand up and down her back.
“Good girl. You know that Daddy loves you. All I want is for you to be safe. I love you. Please, don’t ever scare me again. Please.”
“I won’t, Daddy,” she said between sniffles. “I promise.”
He cupped her face, kissing her lightly, not seeming to care about the tears still running down her cheeks. “I love you so much. I’d be lost without you.”
“I love you too. I’m so glad you moved next door. I don’t know what my life would have been without you. I don’t even want to imagine it. Thinking about it just makes—”
He put his hand over her mouth, his eyes twinkling. “Hush, baby.”
Then he kissed her. Long and sweet.
And she didn’t say another word for a long, long time.
The End
