“Good idea. And we’re obviously not going to talk about this—”

“Ever again,” he finished for me. “Got it.”

Something twisted in my chest at those words. “Great. Sex concluded.”

He put an arm around my shoulders. A friendly arm. “Let’s get you back.”

* * * *

(Matthew)

The most exciting sex of my life, one-on-one division, and I’d agreed to never talk about it again.

I wanted to run around the resort yelling about the amazing sex I had. Some of them already knew, and damn, I wanted to buy them beers and reminisce about the good time we had. But I couldn’t even mention it to Charlotte?

I looked down at the woman beside me. The woman who had gone back to my room with me and decided we were going to fuck. I knew people, powerful people, who were nervous as hell around me because of who I was and the absurd fortune I’d inherited. And this woman had looked at me and decided to hop on?

There had been no justifiable reason to refuse her either. Other than her brother being my best friend. And the fact that she was in her twenties, and I was about to turn forty in a few months. And the fact that she would allegedly obliterate my heart.

She looked up at me and smiled, two perfect dimples appearing in her cheeks, and I knew instantly that Scott was one hundred percent right.

This woman could destroy me.

“You’re awfully quiet,” she said. “Buyer’s remorse?”

“God, no.” I shook my head. “No, that was amazing. I’m just really high.”

“Well, right there’s where you get off, pal,” she said, pointing toward a y-shaped split in the path. “I’ll see you around?”

“There’s no chance you’re going to miss me. I’m going to be at all the ‘functions.’” I made air quotes. I had no idea why I made air quotes.

“Good. At least I’ll have someone to be snarky with.” Her face fell. “No. You’re in the wedding party. You’ll be busy doing wedding party things.”

“Unfortunately. And I’m planning to bang every one of the bridesmaids.” I shouldn’t have made that joke. Not when I’d just had sex with her. I added, “Except for the bear. Obviously.”

She snorted, and seemed totally unbothered by the idea of me sleeping with someone else. And why would she be bothered? Why would I want her to?

Because you’re still heartbroken and you’re rebounding, and Scott is right.

“Well, I wish you luck with the bridesmaids,” she said, nibbling her bottom lip.

Did she expect me to kiss her? She’d avoided kissing me before. I certainly wasn’t going to try again.

“Anyway, thanks for the smoke.” She gestured behind her with her thumb. “And the orgasms.”

“No trouble.” I reached into my pocket and pulled out the baggie I’d brought with me. “Here. In case we don’t get a chance to do this again. Smoke, I mean,” I added quickly.

“Thanks. That’s cool of you.” She tucked it into her back pocket. “Okay. Well. See you at the breakfast thing.”

I took a few slow steps backward and raised my hand in a half-wave. “See ya.”

Then I turned and walked away. I walked away from a woman I would remember for the rest of my life.

It’s a mistake! I yelled at myself, and I wasn’t sure if I meant doing what I was about to do or not doing what I was about to do. But it didn’t matter, because I did it.

“Wait.”

What the hell are you doing?

She turned, saying nothing but arching an eyebrow in question.

“We’re both here all weekend. Do you want to… keep this going?” This is exactly what Scott warned you about. I didn’t care. So what if she left a trail of sexual conquests and broken hearts in her wake?

“Like, see each other again while I’m here?” She tilted her head. “Do you think we can keep it a secret, though?” she asked, and that wasn’t a no.

“I thought getting caught was part of the fun.” I knew she probably didn’t mean getting caught by her family and ruining her brother’s wedding. “Trust me, I don’t want Scott to know about this as much as you don’t want him to know about this.”

She looked away, laughed breathily, and shook her head. “I can’t believe I did this.”

That wasn’t a great sign.

But then she looked back and said, “Sure. Why not?”

“Well, that sounds enthusiastic.” I tried to laugh it off, but it sounded unconvincing to my ears.

“I didn’t want to encourage you.” But for someone who didn’t want to encourage me, she stood very close. “I think this is going to be a lot of fun.”

“I agree.” I put my hand out to shake hers, the way she’d done on the roof, and she took it. We grinned at each other. “So,” I asked, my mind already a blur of ideas. “What do you want to do next?”
