“Please, Jack—I’m not ready for this! I don’t want to do this. I don’t want any man but—” I stopped abruptly, aware that I might get him into trouble if I stated my true feelings. “I don’t want this,” I ended instead.
“Princess, I’m sorry—so damn sorry…” His deep voice broke as he hugged me tight and stroked my hair. “But it just can’t be helped. You’re going into Heat and you need to be bred—you could get really sick otherwise.”
“I’ll get sick then—I don’t care!” I said recklessly. “Anything but this. Anything but letting some stranger impregnate me! Please, Daddy Jack—please!”
I was crying by this point—I couldn’t help it. I didn’t want anyone but my own sweet Daddy to breed me. And I could tell from the way Jack was acting that he didn’t want to let anyone else breed me either.
“You—you’re the only one I want,” I whispered in his ear through my sobs. “Please, Daddy—don’t make me go!”
Before Jack could answer, rough hands were grabbing me and dragging me away from him.
“That’s about enough of that now, there’s no need to go into hysterics,” Packmaster Sanders said in my ear.
“It’s just a little breeding—ain’t no big deal,” another man’s voice said—presumably whoever was helping Sanders drag me away from Jack. He must have been standing around and decided to help out.
“It is a big deal! And get your filthy hands off me—you’re disgusting, both of you!” I screamed at them. “Let me go! Let me go back to my Daddy!” I was so upset I wasn’t even using Jack’s name anymore—to me at that moment I was just a little girl in trouble—a girl who needed her Daddy.
“Disgusting, huh?” Sanders growled, not sounding nearly so nice and wise and kindly as he had a few moments ago. “Sorry we offended you, girly, but you’ve got to get bred!”
“No—you can’t make me!” I fishtailed my body, fighting them with everything I had, but they were two grown men and I was just one girl—I couldn’t get free of them. Still, I didn’t make it easy on them. I kicked and scratched and screamed until I was hoarse.
“Thought…you said…you explained things to her, Jack,” Sanders panted, as he gripped my arms in his clammy hands—giving me the feeling of live, slimy slugs crawling on my flesh. “She sure doesn’t seem to understand about how important it is for her to get bred.”
Jack stood there, a look of agony on his dark face.
“She’s a virgin, Packmaster,” he emphasized. “She’s scared. Look—maybe this isn’t such a good idea. Maybe I should just take her home.”
“And do what—breed her yourself?” Sanders demanded as he and the other man struggled to subdue me.
“No…no, of course not. I never said that,” Jack protested. “But maybe we can just…find a way to ride it out somehow.”
“There ain’t no riding it out when a bitch comes into Heat,” the other man who was holding me scoffed. He had long gray hair and he smelled like an open sewer. But maybe that was just my body rejecting him, the same way it rejected Saunders—or any man who wasn’t my Daddy Jack.
“She’s ripe, Jack,” the Packmaster said. “Which means she’s got to be bred. We can’t afford to lose a fertile bitch just because she’s shy about her first breeding. You know our numbers keep going down—there are fewer Weres born every year. The Pack’s at half strength as it is.”
“Yes, but—” Jack began.
“No buts—she’s got to be bred. Come on, girly.”
And Sanderson and the other man dragged me physically away from my Daddy, towards the shadow of the trees where I would wait for my first breeding and knotting.
THIRTEEN
“Don’t know what you’re so upset about—breeding is no big deal,” the girl beside me said, as I swiped at my eyes and tried unsuccessfully to stop crying. I was well and truly frightened—scared that I might not be able to get away and hide before some man grabbed me and raped me!
Besides, how well would I really be able to hide, even if I was able to run? All the men I had met seemed to be able to smell that I was in Heat—it seemed to be a scent that called to them. How long before they sniffed me out and did whatever they wanted to me?
I looked around, taking in the Pack clearing and the rustling trees on all sides. It was dark now and the almost full moon was rising in the black sky. The wind sighing through the leaves was chilly—it made me shiver as I clutched my arms around myself feeling desperately small and alone.
“Stop bawling,” the girl beside me snapped. She had long brown hair tied back in a ponytail and hard green eyes which she rolled at me dramatically. “God, what a baby!”
