“Now, girl—attend to me,” Dr. Keller said, when I was dressed and perched on the edge of the exam table again, since there was nowhere else in the office to sit. Jack was standing beside me, holding my hand.
The doctor was pointing to the large, laminated poster hanging on her office wall, which showed a cross-section of the female pelvis and genetalia.
The golden rod—which now had a rainbow end—was gone. She had put it someplace safe, presumably to test later on. Now she had a long wooden pointer in one hand and she was using it to tap the poster.
“This is a female Were’s vagina,” she said, tapping to the cross-section which showed a narrow pink tube-like structure. “And this is her womb.” She tapped at another, curving structure above it. “Do you notice anything different?”
“The cervix,” I said after a minute of frowning at the poster and pointed to the end of the vagina, where it met the womb. “Why is it wide open like that instead of closed?” It was almost like the vagina and womb were one structure instead of two separate ones.
“This poster shows a female Were at the peak of her Heat Cycle,” Dr. Keller explained. “The cervix—or mouth of the womb—opens to receive the head of the male Were’s shaft. In this way, he can shoot his seed directly into her, almost certainly ensuring conception when he knots her. And before you ask yet again, the knot is the swelling at the base of a male’s shaft, which grows even bigger to tie him and the female together while he is breeding her,” she added.
“But what—” I began.
“Now,” she continued, as though I hadn’t even spoken. “When your body is in this state, with the mouth of your womb ‘wide open’ as you put it, it means your womb is hungry for seed. Hungry to be filled with life and grow a Were baby.”
“You mean get pregnant?” I demanded. “But…but I’m not ready for that! I’m only nineteen—I haven’t even finished college yet!”
“You must be knotted and bred,” Dr. Keller said sternly. “It does not matter your age or what else goes on in your life—you can die of Heat Fever if you do not allow a male’s shaft to enter you and give your womb a drink of his seed. You must allow him to swell your belly with new life if you wish to live yourself.”
The way she said everything was so weird. But I understood what she was getting at and I didn’t like it—not one bit.
“And you said I have to go to the, uh, Pack Grounds and finds some stranger to do that to me?” I demanded. “No way—forget it!” I remembered the two other Weres I had met in Trubad—Drake Wilkes and Billy Masters—and shuddered in disgust.
“I know you don’t like the idea—I don’t either, baby girl,” Jack rumbled. “But what Dr. Keller is saying is true—a female who goes unbred during her Heat Cycle is in serious danger.”
“If anyone is going to do that to me, I want it to be you, Jack,” I said, turning to him. “None of the other men we’ve met in this town feel right to me. They’re all disgusting!”
“Oh, Princess…” He shook his head sadly. “We can’t do that—it would be wrong. Worse than wrong. The Pack would consider it incest.”
“What?” I demanded. “But why? Just because you and my father became Blood-brothers in some weird ceremony years ago? There’s no real blood relation between us, Jack! And you’re the only one I want.”
“Ah-ha—I see what is happening here,” Dr. Keller said, nodding her head wisely, the overhead light blinking off her spectacles. “Because she is a new Were and you were the only male around her when her Mark appeared, she has imprinted on you,” she told Jack. “This means that she will have deep disgust for any other male that comes near her, because her body only wants yours.”
“What? But that can’t be!” Jack protested. “You know the Pack Rules, Dr. Keller! I can’t knot and breed my Blood-ward! It would be breaking one of the Unbreakable Laws!”
“Yes, I am aware of this, which is why you must try to break the impression at once,” she said sternly. “Go to the Pack Grounds tonight—it is the night before the full moon and there will be an Open Breeding. Let her find another male to knot her and fill her womb with his seed. You must do this—her nectar is coming and the mouth of her womb is open—her Cycle will soon be hitting its peak.”
“No! No way am I letting some strange man knock me up!” I snapped.
I had had enough of this nonsense! Giving Dr. Keller one last glare, I slid off the table and stalked to the door. If she really thought I was going to go through with this, she had another think coming!
