“Please.” He looked downright needy to do my bidding. My body hummed with anticipation, ready to give in to his every want, especially when he nibbled at the pie, pink tongue coming out to swipe at the fork. “At least the pie is edible.”
“You made it. I’d eat it even if it was dust.” I fed him another bite before taking one for myself.
“You’re too sweet. And as if your mom would let me serve you dust.”
My eyes popped open again. “Hey, I just realized. You told my mom.”
“Uh-huh.” Duncan regarded me warily.
“Did she flip?”
“She…” Duncan swallowed audibly, eyes getting big and liquid. I’d never seen him actually cry, and I couldn’t keep the alarm from my voice.
“What, baby? Don’t tell me she was mad.” I swiped at his cheeks with my thumbs.
“Not mad. She said…welcome to the family.” Duncan’s voice cracked.
“Aww, silly.” I kissed him tenderly on the lips, tasting sweet and salty both. “You were already family. Mine. Ours. We’re a family. Now you just get the whole Moon-family extravaganza. Hope you like golf-themed gifts.”
“Love them. And love you. So much.” He kissed me back. “You mean it?”
The hope and love in his expression undid me, made my chest crack wide, and my heart overflow. I wasn’t ever getting tired of him looking at me like that.
“You’re my family. I love the ring, but family is what we’ve made here together. The vows and party are extras, but we’re already a family.”
“Thank you.” His voice was the most reverent thing I’d ever heard. Thanks. He was thanking me when he was the best thing I’d ever found, and I was going to spend the rest of my life thanking the universe for the gift of him.
