Amelia had tried not to think about it. It meant nothing.
Wolfe was doing his job, and he didn’t want to get caught … hanging out with her other than as a job.
It hurt, but she wasn’t going to think about it.
This wasn’t burying her head in the sand. This was just accepting the inevitable.
Wasn’t it?
She gritted her teeth as she felt tears start to build in her eyes. There was no way she was going to cry.
Not now. Not in front of Wolfe.
She pressed her lips together and shoved her hands into her pockets. You’re overthinking everything. Just stop. It doesn’t matter. He doesn’t care about all of that mundane crap.
Unless of course, he did.
Amelia cut off her doubts, refusing to think about them. They made no sense. Wolfe made no sense. None of this made sense.
Rascal and Buster took off toward the edge of the forest, and as they got there, they sat down and turned toward her.
She gave a nod, and they took off.
“You have them well trained,” he said.
“It wasn’t easy, but after I rescued them, I was able to slowly build trust.”
“Trust?”
“Yeah, they needed to know they could trust me, to do the right thing, you know? They’d been hurt already, and of course, I don’t just smell like a human to them. I don’t know if I smell like a predator, alpha, or what. They were skittish around me at first, but now, we’re like one big happy family.”
“And you love them?” Wolfe asked.
Amelia frowned. “Wolfe, what’s going on?”
“Nothing is going on. Just talking.”
“Really? ‘Cause it sounds to me like you have something you want to say to me.” Amelia stopped and turned toward him. “What’s going on?”
“Nothing. Just protecting you. Doing the Alpha’s orders.”
Amelia stopped and looked at him. “Doing the Alpha’s orders?”
“From what you saw.” Wolfe shrugged.
There was something in his tone. Amelia couldn’t quite put her finger on it, but it was there.
“You … er, you don’t think I saw it, do you?”
Wolfe paused, and Amelia stared at him. He didn’t quite meet her eyes, and she hated that.
“Oh,” Amelia said. “I get it. You think I’m doing this for what? To get the attention of the pack? To get your attention?”
“Amelia, the club has combed every single inch of this forest, and we can’t find anything. The forest is clear. Other than the hunters, no one else is here.”
She stared at him. “Fine. Then please leave.”
He didn’t believe her.
It wasn’t like she had gone out of her way to tell him. She’d been following that damn man, and he’d just disappeared. She couldn’t even remember any discernable features, but she knew what she saw.
Now Wolfe doubted who she was as a person.
Let’s not forget he never wants to be seen with you.
Her throat started to burn.
“Amelia,” Wolfe said. “Come on, we’ve got to head back.”
“Why?” Amelia asked. “So you can create some distance between us? Or how about you make it look like you can’t even stand to be close to me? Is that what you want to do?” She put her hands on her hips and glared at him. “Pick which one you’d like to do and then maybe I will be able to follow your lead?”
“It’s not like that,” Wolfe said.
“No, it’s not? It’s not the fact that you’re spending so much time with me so people won’t even question your scent being all over me?” Amelia hated this.
She didn’t know what had happened since this morning, but either way, it left a bad taste in her mouth, and she didn’t like that. Amelia whistled to call her dogs to her.
She wasn’t going to be in Wolfe’s presence for another minute. This fucking hurt.
After everything she had faced with the pack, nothing compared to this. She could take her parents hating her. The pack despising her. Being sent to a damn building that was far away from the pack as possible, but this with Wolfe, no, this hurt.
He thought she was a liar. Lying about a mystery stalker to gain attention. Attention she wasn’t even seeking.
How dare he?
Then, to make matters worse, he was embarrassed by her. This had moved so freaking fast.
Her dogs hadn’t come back to her, and Amelia started to worry.
“Amelia, wait. If you just tell me the truth, I won’t let the club know. I’ll tell them that I handled it, and everything will be fine.” He grabbed her arms, forcing her to look at him.
She glared at him. “Oh, so you think you’re doing me a favor?”
“Come on, this is better this way. The pack, they don’t have the patience with you.”
She pulled out of his grasp. “I have never lied. I have never wanted attention from you or the pack. I will not admit to something I didn’t do. I didn’t lie here. I know what I saw.” She stepped away from him as Wolfe tried to move closer. “Don’t you dare touch me. Don’t you dare come near me.”
