His gaze traveled briefly over her. “Saving you from a spider.”
Questions later. Spider first. She pointed at the toilet. “He’s behind there. He’s really big.”
Sean approached the back of the toilet with animated steps, mocking her. If she hadn’t been so scared to face the spider herself, she would’ve smacked the grin off his face. He peered around the pipe and stuck his whole arm behind it.
She shuddered for his sake, imagining how the spider had to feel in his hand. When he straightened with something pinched between his thumb and forefinger, she flattened herself against the wall and turned her head away. She hoped he wasn’t one of those stupid males who got a kick out of chasing frightened people with hairy spiders.
“It’s a crab,” he said.
“What?” She faced him slowly. True enough, dangling from his fingers was a wiggling baby crab.
Exhaling with relief, she asked, “What was it doing in the shower?”
“The doors are open. It could’ve come in from outside, or maybe it came through the drainpipe.”
She shivered, thinking what else could crawl through the drain. “I’d appreciate it if you could release it outside so that I can get out of the bathroom.”
“Certainly,” he said with a salute.
She narrowed her eyes at his back. When he left, she shut the door and hurriedly pulled on her clothes. Sean was waiting for her when she stepped into the bedroom.
Wiping her wet hair behind her ear, she said, “Thanks.” She was still angry with him, but her manners dictated that she thanked him for his help.
“No problem, pussycat.”
“I told you not to call me that.”
“Fine.” He grinned. “No problem, kitten.”
She huffed. “Some people are beyond help.”
“Exactly.” All traces of humor vanished from his face. “Why did you come?”
“I was just about to ask you the same question, Sean Rivers.”
“Do you know who Juan is?” he asked in a low voice.
“I’ve checked him out on the internet. I know he’s said to be in the drug trafficking business.”
His eyebrows snapped together. “And you still came?”
“The spa is important to me.”
“I want you to leave,” he said, taking a step toward her. “The boat’s not gone, yet. You can still catch it back to the mainland.”
She laughed. “Who do you take yourself for? Do you seriously think I’ll turn my back on the money and go just because you told me to? I have a right to be here as much as you.” Argh. Why was she even arguing with him? “What are you doing in my room, anyway?”
“Our room,” he said with a wry smile.
“What?” she exclaimed.
“It seems that since the two of us were the last names to be added to the staff list, we ended up sharing the only accommodation that was left.”
“Surely they won’t let us share.” She waved a hand between them. “I mean, you’re a man and I’m a woman. There’s no privacy here except for the bathroom. It’s not…” She searched for the right word. “Proper.”
He swept a dark blue gaze over her, making her feel naked despite her clothes. “Have you looked around you? Do you know what kind of people you’re dealing with? Believe me, your accommodation is the last thing you should worry about.”
She didn’t have to ask what he meant. She’d already came to her own conclusion. Judging by the men and women she’d seen so far, some of the girls were paid escorts, and the men liked to grope, several girls at the same time, actually. As long as they steered clear from her, it wasn’t for her to judge. She didn’t like the business Juan was involved in, but if Sean could do it, so could she. She was doing it for Matt. Her moral values weren’t going to stand in the way of her brother’s future.
Sean’s stance slackened. “Listen to me, kitten. You—”
“Hi, there,” Leona said, walking through the door. She stopped when she spotted Sean. “Sorry.” She arched an eyebrow. “Am I interrupting something?”
“Not at all,” Asia said quickly. “I’m ready.” She took her cosmetic box and turned to Sean. “I’ll take the bed by the window. You can do as you please.”
With that, she strolled from the room with her head held high, hoping she looked indifferent instead of nervous. Sharing a room with Sean was not a good idea. First of all, he hated her. Secondly, she hated him too. And last but not the least, he looked too damn good standing there in those tight jeans and a T-shirt that stretched over his broad chest, every muscle defined to perfection. His spiky copper hair was just messy enough to be sexy, and that Highland drawl could wet her panties. However, there was a good reason why she shouldn’t notice him in that way. They were business competitors, and business and pleasure didn’t mix.
