“Only for naps. She still sleeps in her crib. If she slept with us, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t get the fringe benefits my husband promised me if I remarried him. I can’t jeopardize that,” she jokes.
“Damn, I married a smart woman,” I laugh.
“You’re a lucky man,” she replies, her grin deepening.
“Trust me, Ice. I know that.”
Her face becomes almost serious as she stares at me. “Thank you for not giving up on me, Liam,” she whispers, her voice tender.
“I think that’s my line, Ice.”
“I’ve been thinking,” she says, her finger brushing in Evie’s soft curls.
“Should I worry?” I ask, mostly kidding. I know that Ellie and I are solid. We’ve always been close, even when I found her in Phoenix after almost two years, we clicked back into place as if the time apart was nothing. But, since we worked out our past, we’re close in a way that I didn’t even know was possible. She tells me that we’re soulmates. I never used to believe in that, but Ellie is definitely part of my soul, so I can’t argue.
“I want another baby.”
“Sweetheart, Evie is—”
“She needs a sister close to her age,” she says, a crease forming on her forehead. I reach out and rub the frown, only wanting to see happiness on her face. I know she’s thinking about Dawn. We don’t hear from her anymore. Honestly, after Ellie confessed the ugly scene she had with her sister and mother, I’m glad. Ellie confessed she wonders if Dawn didn’t have a hand in Glenna’s death. After hearing that, I’d be lying if I didn’t admit I like that Ellie doesn’t have contact with her anymore. I know it hurts Ellie, but she’s slowly coming to terms with it all.
“We’ll discuss having a baby later,” I tell her, not ready.
“Liam, you know Torrent will be pregnant soon. If you knock me up, we can go through pregnancy together.”
“Later, Ice. We’ll talk about it later,” I tell her, knowing I’ll give in, but still worried about her having a baby so soon.
“Okay, but you just need to realize that if you drag your feet, Devil will outdo you.”
“That’s cold, Ice. You know I can’t let that happen.”
“I know.” She grins and I shake my head.
“I love you, Ellie.”
“I love you, too, Liam, and I’d show you, but….” She motions down at the sleeping Evie between us. I put my finger against Evie’s hand, stroking her tiny, perfect finger.
“I wouldn’t have it any other way, Ice.” Evie’s little fingers wrap around my much larger one, grasping it in her sweet little hold. It feels like my heart swells in my chest. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” I repeat, my voice thick with emotion because my heart is so full…
It’s overflowing.
