“There’s another one?” Delilah asked as she pointed at Andrew, who sat on my single armchair near the window.

I gave Andrew a stern look before turning back to Delilah as we stood in the kitchen area.

“My dad hired four bodyguards to watch over me while he’s locked up,” I told her, watching her eyes widen as I expected. The last few days of my life had been insane, and it was a relief to finally be able to talk to someone about it.

“Four of them? That’s insane. I only have two with me when I go to events,” Delilah gasped as she screwed off the top of the wine bottle. “What are they protecting you from?”

I reached up into one of the cabinets and grabbed two wine glasses, placing them between us so that she could pour us some rose.

“Dad decided to get involved with a drug lord, so he may or may not come after me for some reason,” I said with a shrug. “I think Dad is just being paranoid like usual.”

Delilah set the wine bottle down after filling our glasses. She shook her head in disbelief.

“Are you serious? A drug lord?” she asked with wide eyes. “Don’t they have a reputation of killing people?”

I shrugged, trying not to worry myself too much. It wasn’t like I could control what happened, and my bodyguards were supposed to handle it anyway.

“I think I’ll be okay. I’m just waiting for this storm to blow over so that I can live my life how I want to,” I sighed before taking a few sips of my wine.

Delilah watched me down my wine.

“I can imagine that this has been stressful for you,” she said.

“It’s been more annoying than anything,” I muttered before looking over at Andrew, who monitored us with slightly narrowed eyes. He wasn’t all that enthused that I had a guest over, which made me wonder how he would react if I brought a guy over instead. “There’s no telling how long my dad will be away for either.”

“What about the house? All of your belongings? I went by earlier and press was crawling around,” Delilah asked with a grimace.

I shook my head as I lowered my eyes.

“I think I’ll have to stay here for a while. It’s tiny, but at least I’m not lonely,” I said with a smirk, trying to brighten myself up now that I had a friend here. I didn’t want to be so gloomy all the time, even if I had plenty of reasons to not be a ball of sunshine.

Delilah looked over at Andrew, humming beneath her breath.

“I guess that’s the good part of all this. Hot company, including yours truly,” Delilah commented as she gestured to herself with a light laugh, letting her walls down gradually to try to lessen the tension. We shared a giggle, which made Andrew raise an eyebrow.

I took a few more sips of mine, letting the alcohol warm me up. It wasn’t like I had much trouble with that lately. Whenever one of my hot bodyguards was in the apartment, it felt like a furnace in here.

“I was so close to having the freedom I never got to experience,” I muttered to her. “Then, they showed up.”

Delilah leaned closer to me, keeping her voice low so that Andrew couldn’t hear.

“Don’t worry. We’ll figure out a way to get you away from them so you can finally have some fun,” she whispered to me, shooting me a wink.

Excitement and relief washed over me. I could always rely on Delilah to come through for me, and I had no doubt that we would figure out how to have a good time tonight. After everything that happened, I deserved a night out to let loose and have fun. I would have Delilah with me to help keep me safe too.

“How long are you staying in town for?” I asked her.

“Just until tomorrow,” Delilah said with a small frown. “I wanted to stay longer, but I have to get back to work. I just wanted to swing by and see you.”

I smiled in understanding and nodded. It still meant a lot to me that she used one of her free days to come by and see me. It just showed how good of a friend she was, and I needed her more than ever. My life was up in the air, being rearranged while in suspension. I just hoped it didn’t come crashing down.

“Thank you,” I told her. “I’ve been going crazy here.”

“That’s why I got us a whole bottle, honey,” Delilah laughed as she motioned to the wine bottle.

I joined in on her laughter before finishing off my glass so that she could pour me another. As the alcohol flowed, our laughter continued. We ended up on the bed near Andrew, grabbing our stomachs and dying over an old memory.
