“That’s okay. Your fleeting company was more than enough,” Rhett assured me, slightly tilting his head as his eyes moved over my figure.
Heat stirred within me, starting in my stomach, and trailing downward between my thighs. I couldn’t remember the last time someone looked at me like that. Hell, I didn’t know if that had ever happened before. He must’ve done this all the time, though.
“I guess I can be a little more welcoming since you’re just looking out for me,” I said with a shrug, feeling my walls start to crumble. How did he do that so easily?
Rhett smiled at me, looking pleased as he tucked his hands into the pockets of his black slacks.
“We’d appreciate it,” Rhett assured me, stepping even closer to me. “I’d appreciate it.”
I swallowed hard as I gazed up at him. Even if he was shorter than the others, he still towered over me.
“Sure,” I said, managing to coax the word out. “You’ll be there?”
“I’ll be switching out with them. I have to get some rest too.” Rhett chuckled as he kept his eyes on mine. “But I’ll be back soon. Why? Think you’ll miss me?”
My cheeks burned furiously, but I did my best to keep an amused look on my face. I didn’t want him to know that I was as bashful as an infatuated teenager. I spent all of this time trying to prove how tough I was, so I couldn’t unravel just because of a cute guy and his nice words.
“I doubt four people will fit in that tiny apartment. Much less six if you join the party,” I merely said with a small smirk on my face.
Rhett lifted his eyebrow at me, still seeming interested.
“I do enjoy a good party,” he informed me.
“You seem easy to entertain,” I joked with a playful expression.
Rhett feigned an offended look before chuckling.
“You’re just a good entertainer,” he replied. “I’m having way more fun now than I was before.”
I could imagine having to stand out in a hallway for hours to be pretty boring. It was bordering on torturous having to stay locked in the apartment, especially since I could go out and do whatever I wanted. I had a feeling that the bodyguards wouldn’t let me go far, though, or they would just follow me all over the place. Where was the fun in that?
“Do you really have to stand here the entire time? You can’t take a break or sit down?” I asked him.
Rhett shook his head as he joined his hands behind his back, grabbing his wrist in a professional stance.
“I have to stand here until my shift is over,” he replied. “Trouble can happen at any second.”
I lifted my eyebrows. It was easy to forget that he was a bodyguard at times because he was so lively and funny. When I was reminded that he could be a serious, dangerous person, it was jarring at first.
“How’d you become a bodyguard?” I asked him. “You seem more like… I don’t even know.”
Rhett smirked at my confusion, tilting his head at me.
“I’ve done martial arts since I was a kid. Loved the adrenaline. I did some security jobs around the city and fought in some martial arts tournaments. I met Andrew when he was leading the security detail for a big festival in town, and I became a part of his team,” he explained to me.
“Serious guy, isn’t he?” I replied.
Rhett shrugged.
“He can be, but he’s the head of the team. He keeps things running,” he replied. “That’s why we’re the best in the city.”
I was dealing with the real deal, which was great for me security-wise, but it also intimidated me slightly. How far would these guys go to protect me?
“I guess I should be honored,” I said with a small smile.
Rhett shook his head.
“It’s never an ideal situation to need a bodyguard. Or four of them for that matter,” he replied. “We don’t care for praise. We just want to do our job right and keep you safe.”
My heart fluttered as our eyes met. I knew that I was just a job to them, but when Rhett said those words with his soft, dark eyes and crooked smile, it felt deeper than that. I felt like a fool.
“I’ll stay out of your way,” I said, not wanting to embarrass myself at any point in front of them. I’d already made a scene twice, and they probably all saw me as some sort of terror. No wonder Benjamin didn’t seem all that happy about watching me.
“Just do your normal thing. We’ll stay out of your way,” Rhett promised me, releasing his wrist to fall into a more casual stance.
That was the thing. I didn’t want to go about doing my normal thing. I wanted to shake things up, to see what my life could become if I took control of it. I was starting to see the bodyguards as less of an obstacle, so I wondered what kind of role they would play in my life as the days went by.
