“Yes, but I’ll grab it.” I get up, move around the island to the coffee pot, open the cabinet above it, and find the coffee cups. It’s just exactly where I’d put them. I reach into the fridge and pull the milk out. After doctoring mine up, I freshen his up.
Eventually, we sit down and eat together, talking about our days. I know nothing about him, so when I learn he’s a doctor, I light up, telling him about being an emergency room nurse. I love how much we have in common. He eventually goes to work, and I clean up the kitchen. He gives me the use of his SUV so I can go into Charleston for my appointment with the nursing board. Once I’m done with that, thankful that it was easy as hell, I stop at the grocery store and pick up the stuff I need to cook dinner for Fletcher. On the way home, I stop at his office. He told me where it was this morning.
“Hi, can I help you?” a young guy in a white coat says, looking up from the computer in front of him.
“Hello. I’m looking for my husband, Dr. Blake?”
“Ah, you must be Florence. Dr. Studly hasn’t spoken of anything else but you this morning.” He laughs, and so do I, feeling at ease with this guy. He seems like a goofball.
“Yes. I’m Florence Jorgensen, I mean Blake.” Second time today I’ve said that. It’s going to take some getting used to.
“Dr. Carter Sutton,” he says, extending his hand to me. I shake it; then he kisses the back of it.
“For fucks sake, Carter. You’ve got to get your own girl,” Fletcher says, entering the room. I jerk my hand away from Carter. Fletcher doesn’t look or sound pissed, but I know that can change in an instant.
“I’m sorry, Fletcher,” I say immediately.
“Don’t apologize. Carter is the town flirt. He flirts with everyone, even my grandmother isn’t safe from this charmer.”
I can’t help grinning at this assessment of Carter. It fits perfectly. I look around the room and saw the nurse wanted to sign and ask about it.
“You’re hired,” both Fletcher and Carter say simultaneously.
Okay, Hollow’s Hollow is getting better and better. I’m all set to start as soon as my West Virginia license arrives.
I wave goodbye and climb back into the SUV, heading home. It dawns on me that his house feels like home to me so quickly.
I can’t wait for him to come so I can feed him.
Chapter Two
Fletcher
It has been a full twenty-four hours since we were married, and it has been a quiet and pensive one.
When I left the house last night to confront Lloyd, he confirmed part of what I already knew. She is running from something or someone. He said he deduced this from the tone of her voice when he called to see if she was indeed interested in being matched. There was something frantic, desperate in her voice when he spoke with her. He didn’t want to pry and figured she would confide in me when we got closer.
Needless to say, his answer didn’t soothe the knot in my stomach. It only added to it because I couldn’t stop the ominous feeling that something was wrong and it would show up at our doorstep. Once I left him, I went right to Paul. “Dr. Blake, how can I help?” He smirks at me because he knows how annoyed I get when my best friends call me by my title.
“Hey asshole I am here on serious business.” He leans into his desk and gives me his undivided attention. “I believe my wife has a few secrets that are scaring the hell out of her and have caused her great pain. We are not at the point that I can ask her, but I would like to know now.”
“How can I help?”
“I need you to find out what you can as soon as possible.”
“You got it. I will start looking into it now.”
“Thank you man. I owe you.” He looks at me like I am crazy.
“You owe me nothing. If someone had hurt my Miriam, I would be out for blood, so I get it. I will get back to you as soon as I can.”
When I woke up this morning, she was still asleep. She looked so peaceful, serene even. I could see the weight she had been holding on her shoulders is not there when she is not awake. Her soft pink cheeks are so lovely, leading to those rosy lips I keep wanting to taste. After having breakfast together, I went into the office.
I worked late tonight due to a sick baby with an ear infection. I called her to let her know what time I would be home. Now, I am pulling into the driveway, unsure of what I will walk into but eager to see her beautiful face and that fiery red hair. Turning my key in the lock. I open the door, and the smell of something delicious hits my nose. “Honey, I’m home,” I say as half a joke and half in my heart. I have always wanted to have a reason to say that. When I enter the kitchen, she stands by the table, wringing her hands. “Something smells amazing,” I say, dropping my key in the glass bowl.
