“Yeah, I don’t feel like goin’ to that shit anymore,” Nathan brushes off as though his word is the only ruling that matters. “Let’s just go back to my crib and chill.”

“Nope,” Carmen instantly shoots him down. “That bitch comes back at Christmas, and due to Tye’s constant practice schedule and her watching his every waking move when she’s around like a fucking hawk, he doesn’t get out much.” My best friend drops her hands defiantly onto her hips. “We’re fucking going goddamn it. Your little smelly fucking basement will still be there tomorrow. Live a little.”

“Yeah, come on, Nay Cray,” Justus whines loudly. “Private school honeys are always down to ride. And sometimes two at a fucking time!”

“Two at a time,” Eli needily echoes.

Nathan pouts.

Folds his arms like a toddler refusing to go to daycare in the morning.

“Whatever,” he huffs. “You do what you wanna do, but I’m gonna kick it at my crib. Call a couple of honey bunnies to hop on over.”

Nathan cockily smiles to himself prompting Carmen to state, “Make sure they don’t have rabies.”

He glares, gives her the finger, and walks off for his car without another word.

At that point, she deems herself successful and tosses her hands in the air. “Let’s fucking do this!”

Arriving at the party in my thigh high boots – which constantly receive high praise from Ry in both person as well as via text – and a short, tight black dress that I stopped by Carmen’s to change into, I helplessly blush at all the compliments and unexpected whistle sounds.

I haven’t been to many parties since Ry and I officially split in public.

Back in the day – when we were knowingly together – we made occasional appearances at a few of the bigger events like this one. For us, it was never about coming to get wasted or needing an excuse to dry hump in front of an audience. No. We came to hang with friends who swore we kept forgetting to come up for air. We’d dance. Watch them make idiots of themselves. Laugh and lead ourselves away to his car where we’d either fool around or drive off to go somewhere better like the lake.

God, I miss our lake nights.

The talks we’d have about weird shit like the difference between ferrets and weasels.

The plans we’d make to get matching tattoos on our feet.

The dreams we’d have of our first wedding gift being engraved towels with our initials.

We don’t usually get that much solid time together anymore.

Not between fake boyfriends and girlfriends.

Not with me studying to make sure I keep the scholarship I’ve already been given and tutoring to have spending cash.

I’m not always sure where Ry spends his non-Pres time.

He still really likes the gym.

But he also really likes Ivo.

And while I don’t have a problem with Ivo, I don’t love what I know Ivo does.

As soon as we’re inside Linus’s packed mega mansion, Carmen insists we head for a drink before wandering off to find my fake boyfriend and the college guy she’s anxious to sleep with.

We’ve barely made it three feet from the door where I’m stopped by a junior girl that I recognize from one of my elective classes but am not exactly close to. “Pres!!!”

“It’s Presley.”

“Right, right,” she giggles, brushing blonde hair away from her bobbing face, “Totally didn’t mean to like offend.”

No one ever does.

Sometimes I think people are starting to fear what I can do to them based on what I’ve done to Ry’s reputation.

But I wanna tell them that’s not me.

That’s not who I am.

Then again…it feels like it’s starting to become that way.

“Love your dress,” she compliments with a wave of a finger. “BCBG? Gucci? Prada?”

“Patience,” Carmen viciously bites. “We’re running the fuck out of it.”

“Sorry,” the junior quickly apologizes. “Just wanted to be the one to warn you that Collins and his girlfriend are here, too.”

“Does he have his pet on a leash?” Carmen’s remark causes us all to giggle prior to her tipping her towards the kitchen area in the distance where they can be spotted. “Eh. Guess not.”

Another round of catty snickers hits the air.

God, I can’t stand Bambi.

She’s like that stubborn piece of food that gets stuck in your teeth. The one you do everything you can possibly think of to get rid of it, but it stays stuck, determined to ruin every fucking meal you have until you can finally unwedge the little bitch from that space that brushing, flossing, and toothpicks seem incapable of reaching. That is if you haven’t destroyed your entire mouth in the process of trying to get it to just go the fuck away.

Yup.

That pretty much sums up the plague that is Bambi.

We thank the junior for the warning yet proceed full steam ahead, Carmen still deserved to get a drink.
