His eyes narrow challengingly on me. He takes another step.

Fuck this. I’m not going to let anything happen to my man. These cruel men are trying to kill him and I’m going to do whatever I can to stop them.

He goes to take another step and I pull the trigger.

The deafening boom explodes through the forest, sending birds flying into the sky with angry squawks.

I’m expecting the Frenchman to fly backward, but instead, he darts to the side, dodging the shotgun slug. He rushes forward, closing the distance between us in a blur, and swings his sword up in an arc. Before I can even react, the sharp blade cuts through the barrel of my shotgun, slicing my gun in two.

“What the—?” I gasp as I jerk back and drop the broken gun.

He swings the sword back around, ready to cut my head off, but Noah lunges on him with a furious growl. He grabs the Frenchman’s neck with a strong hand, lifts him up, and slams his back into the rocky ground.

The two other men and the polar bear rush forward as Noah slams his fists into the wolf shifter over and over until he’s tackled off.

“Ostie,” the Frenchman whimpers in a small broken voice as he stares up at the sky in pain. “I fucking hate bears.”

Noah is outnumbered, but he’s winning the fight. He launches Jackson into the rock wall and then cracks the big guy with the scarred chest in the jaw. The polar bear lunges on him with a nasty growl. Noah catches his open jaws, the sharp deadly teeth inches from his face.

While he’s distracted with the bear, Jackson recovers and rushes over. He slams his fist into Noah’s exposed ribs with hard devastating punches. Noah grunts in pain as he struggles to hold the polar bear’s teeth away from him.

I have to do something! They’re going to kill him!

I run over and grab some rope that some climbers left behind. I run up behind Jackson, wrap it around his neck, put my foot on his muscular back, and start pulling as hard as I can. He immediately stops punching my man and claws at the rope.

“Layla,” Noah says as he struggles with the bear. “Get to the car… run…”

I’m not running from this fight. I’m with my man until the end.

Jackson grabs the tight rope behind him and swings it forward. I get launched in the air along with it and sail several yards before I land hard on the ground.

My elbow is burning and my knee is hurt, but I ignore the pain and quickly turn around to see if my man is okay.

He’s more than okay. He launches into a berserker mode, slamming the polar bear’s mouth shut and then giving him a hard uppercut with his elbow. He kicks Jackson in the chest, sending him flying into the rock wall.

I guess watching his mate get hurt got his adrenaline going overtime.

The guy with the tattoos and scarred chest comes running over and throws a hard punch at Noah. He jerks his head back and grabs the man’s forearm just as the polar bear comes lunging forward with another vicious attack.

Noah yanks the man’s arm right into the path of the polar bear’s jaws. The bear’s teeth sink into the man’s tattooed flesh and he roars out in pain.

I’m watching in awe as my man fights for us. He leaps back onto Jackson and grabs his hair. He swings Jackson’s head down and slams it into his knee, rocking the man and bringing him to his knees.

The Frenchman groans as he tries to get up and then stumbles back down. They’re all struggling, except for Noah. His shoulders are heaving up and down with every heavy breath. His dark brown eyes are glowing with fury. His hands are squeezed into fists.

The four shifters look like they got their asses kicked and are having second thoughts about the fight.

“That’s enough,” Noah snarls. “I told you. This is over.”

He walks over and stands in front of me, shielding me protectively with his muscular body.

“I have my mate now and I’m ready to move on,” he says. “I suggest you do the same.”

“We can’t just take your word for it,” Jackson says as he wipes the blood leaking out of his nose. “We took an oath to protect the world from feral shifters like you.”

“My bear is no longer feral,” he says. “And I’ll prove it. If my bear is still out of control, he won’t stop attacking you until he’s dead or all four of you are. Agreed?”

Jackson nods slightly.

“Stand back,” Noah whispers to me. “And if I’m wrong, you run.”

“You’re not wrong,” I whisper back. I can feel it. I can sense the protectiveness, the love. I know it will be okay.

He lets his bear come forward and I watch in shock and awe as his body grows and then explodes into a huge Kodiak bear.
