“I can’t see anything,” he says when he stands back up.
I put my hand on his arm and lean in to look. It’s just blackness, like even the stars won’t light up around this guy. Like they know they can’t compete.
“Oh!” I say when it clicks. “The roof. Obviously.”
I’m laughing nervously, embarrassed as I hit the button that parts the domed roof in two.
“Wow,” we both whisper as the gorgeous night sky appears over our heads. We don’t even need a telescope. The stars up here are breathtaking. It’s a perfect night with not one cloud in the sky.
“You first,” he says as he steps back. “Show me something good to look at.”
I bend over and peer into the telescope, wondering if he found something good to look at. I arch my back more than necessary to stick my butt in the air, knowing he’s probably admiring it right now.
It’s so hard to concentrate on what I’m doing. I’m all shaky and thrown off by this man. I’m pretending to scan the sky, but really I’m seeing nothing. All I want to do is take my eye away from this thing and admire him instead.
“Oh, here’s something!” I say when a bright splash of something from another galaxy appears in the lens. I adjust the lens like Tory taught me and it becomes crystal clear.
“Have a look,” I say as I pull away from the lens.
Cain is leaning against the railing and watching me like the most spectacular star in the galaxy has got nothing on me. He steps closer and my heart races.
Arousal, need, lust—they all fill me from my head to my toes. The thrill of knowing we’re up here alone, of knowing that I’m completely at his mercy in this secluded observatory and he could do anything he wanted to me is making it hard to think straight.
My hand is on the lens as I watch him walk over. He puts his warm hand on mine and then leans down to look.
I don’t move. We’re so close. I wonder if he can hear my heart beating. Didn’t grandpa say that he could hear a rabbit in the forest once? It’s silent up here, except for the pounding in my chest.
“It’s beautiful,” he says as he slowly stands back up. He towers over me this close together.
My breath catches in my throat as I look up at him. My eyes drop to his sexy lips and I can feel my mouth watering.
Fuck, the way he’s looking at me…
My toes curl in my shoes. Heat saturates my body. I’m so wet…
I wonder if he can smell it?
My cheeks burn as he inhales deeply.
“But all the stars in the night sky are incomparable to your beauty,” he says as he touches my arm and steps in closer. He reaches up and cups my cheek as he gazes into my eyes. So many emotions, desires, and needs are swirling through me right now. I’m a hot mess for this man. I don’t understand what’s happening to me. I’m never like this.
My lips part as his thumb lightly brushes my cheek.
“We’re mates, Mindy,” he says in a low sexy voice. “Do you know what that means?”
I shake my head, even though I know exactly what it means. It means I want to jump his bones.
But I want to hear him telling me what it means to him.
“It means you belong to me,” he says as his lips get closer, or maybe I’m bringing my lips closer, I don’t even know anymore. “We’re soul mates. We’re fated mates. A perfect fit for one another in every way. We’re connected on a level that regular spouses can never attain. Our souls are one. Do you feel it?”
I nod as I’m mesmerized by his deep brown eyes and his sexy voice. This man has put a spell on me.
He’s taken over my body.
“It’s only going to get deeper from here,” he says as those entrancing eyes fall to my lips. “Our love will be earth-shattering.”
His hands lower to my hips. My pussy aches when I feel the strength in his grip. My chin tilts up, my lips part once more, my eyelids begin to fall closed.
This is it…
This will be my first kiss.
He starts to lower his mouth and I dart up, suddenly freaking out. “Wine!”
“What?” he asks, looking at me confused.
“We should have wine! Yeah! There’s got to be a bottle of wine hidden somewhere in the office back there.”
I dart out of his grip and race down the metal steps.
“I’ll be right back,” I say as I practically run down the short hall and into the office. I can’t even look back at him. I don’t want to see the confusion and disappointment in his eyes.
I open the door to the messy office, hurry in, flatten my back against the wall, close my eyes, and curse myself for being such a chicken.
