“Fine, I’ll stay. You’re good at convincing me of things.”
Spencer grins. “It’s one of my finer qualities. What do you want to watch?”
“Something funny again?”
“Sure. I’ll make some popcorn; you pick the movie.”
When Spencer returns, it feels exactly like the other night at my place. We sit on the couch that we just broke in, our legs touching, the popcorn sitting on the table in front of us. I try to watch the movie, I really do. It’s funny and one of my favorites.
But it’s too hard to focus when Spencer James is sitting right next to me. Was it a mistake to say we need to stop what we’re doing? Was it a mistake to say we’d continue for a month? My head is spinning, and I can only think of one way to calm it down.
It will cause more issues in the morning, but for now, I don’t care.
I kiss Spencer when he looks over at me, and once again, we get carried away. This time, Spencer leads me up to his newly decorated bedroom, and we collapse into his bed. I make him feel good just like he did with me, and he whispers my name in that way that drives me crazy. I’d record it and listen to it every night.
When we’re finished, I know I should leave and avoid the confrontation that needs to happen in the morning, but instead, I cuddle up next to Spencer and fall asleep.
Chapter Twenty – Spencer
I wake up with Leila’s face pressed against my chest. She’s still asleep, so I’m careful not to move so I don’t disturb her. At some point in the middle of the night, she put on one of my shirts from my dresser drawer, and I can’t deny I was a little turned on at the sight of her.
I’ll forever be grateful for that mid-afternoon walk through the park that brought me to Leila and her crazy dog for escaping and finding me.
Leila had to have changed her mind about everything she said last night. I wish she had let me get a word in and explain how good we could be together. She sees it too, but I get that she’s scared. We’re very different people, but that doesn’t mean we can’t give it a shot.
My stomach sinks, remembering her face while talking about those articles about her. Since she never mentioned it, I assumed it didn’t bother her. Clearly, I was wrong. Leila has been harboring that for nearly a month. It makes me hate her friends for sending them to her. I’m sure they mean well, but what’s the point? They have to know those pictures are some skewed version of the truth.
Just like you and Leila, my brain reminds me. Are we any better than those tabloids since we’re deceiving people, too? Are we deceiving ourselves?
Maybe it’s just me. I wanted more with Leila, and she put up her walls at the mere idea. I only agreed to one more month because I knew last night couldn’t be it. I figured maybe if we stayed together a while longer, she’d change her mind.
It happened faster than I expected. Leila is the one who made that first move on the couch last night. I was going to give her the space she asked for. It’s not my nature to push people when they’re not ready. Leila told me she was ready. She kissed me, and the movie fell away, just like the first time we were together at her apartment.
Is it possible to be the happiest man alive? Today, I’m going to ask Leila officially to be my real girlfriend. There’s no way she’ll say no. I’m tempted to lean down and kiss her slightly parted lips, but I would hate to wake her up. She told me she’s not much of a morning person, and I don’t want her bad side first thing. I close my eyes and try to find sleep again myself, but it’s no use.
Because of the premier last night, I have today off from filming, but I go back in around three in the morning tomorrow to do some more night shoots. I’ll be glad when this movie is over. Which reminds me, I need to talk to Randy. Usually, I have my next project lined up by now, but there’s nothing in the works. I haven’t even had an audition for Candy’s dad’s movie that I’m dying to be a part of.
Leila stirs and yawns, stretching her arms out over her head. When her hand comes into contact with my face, she jumps away from me and yelps. “Oh my God. I forgot I was in your bed. I’m so sorry!”
I smile. “Don’t worry about it. I didn’t mind.”
She covers herself with the blanket. “I shouldn’t be here. I meant to sneak out in the middle of the night, but I guess I was really tired.”
