“The burrito?”

“The wedding. It’s my sister’s wedding.”

Dumbfounded, I stare harder and attempt not to get lost in her green eyes. “Wait, at Sagecrest? To—”

Scarlett looks down at the off-white tile floor, her eyelashes are so long I feel like I’m more lost in them than the deep green of her eyes. “Yeah, she’s marrying… him.”

Him. Rat bastard. I don’t even want to say his name or think about him or him touching her, trying to marry her, sleeping with her sister, him.

Has there ever actually been a worse pronoun?

HIM?!

THAT GUY?

She waves her hand in front of my face. “Did you just have a stroke?”

“I’ll stroke someone,” I bite out.

Her eyes widen. “I don’t think it’s that kind of gas station.”

I shake my head. “Never mind, so we’re going to the same place.”

“Yeah.” She rocks back on her heels while I suddenly find the floor extremely interesting with its burrito grease and one long lost hair. “Cool.”

“Yup.”

“So I’m singing.”

“Okay, Judas, just make sure to keep all that silver.”

“Oh, please, you’re going too!”

“Family.”

“Friend!” Okay, she’s not a friend, more like oh look money, that’s my friend. “Whatever,” I snatch the burrito and walk to the cash register, tap my card against the machine, and walk off. I should stay. I really should talk with her, but she’s distracting, and weirdly aggressive with her communication. It’s like she brought out the best in me when we first met, then decided to switch teams and bring out the worst.

By the time I’m in the limo I can’t even eat the burrito I was so excited about because she’s leaving the gas station and getting into her rental.

Something hits my shoulder, nearly causing a calamity with the burrito and the sauce I grabbed. “What?”

“You okay?”

It’s Dustin.

“What the hell? When did you even get in here?” I jerk my burrito away and stare at his perplexed face. When did he get glasses? Wait, has he always had glasses on? Am I losing my mind?

Dustin frowns, making his glasses slide down his nose in a way that has me annoyed for absolutely no reason. “Um, I’ve been waiting for you for like five minutes. I grabbed food, went to the bathroom, passed you twice, I even asked if you wanted water, but you were slapping some poor woman over the burrito I’m assuming is in your hand, and I told you I’d be waiting in the limo.”

How did all of that just happen?

See! She makes me crazy! With her crazy turtle antics!

I shove the burrito into my mouth and take a bite. It’s crunchy, weirdly juicy, and I’m pretty sure I taste nothing but oil and extra grease but it’s worth it, because I got the burrito in the end.

“That sucks.” Dustin points out the window. “Looks like her car isn’t starting, and it’s really hot out.”

Don’t look. Don’t look.

I glance.

It’s Scarlett, with the hood up to her tiny little rental car. She’s pacing, probably cursing by the looks of it. Why does she have to look so sexy in her jean shorts and stupid white T-shirt?

And why the hell am I in such a bad mood?

“I mean…” Dustin won’t stop talking. “She’s probably going to be stuck there. Anyway, weren’t you guys arguing in the gas station? Is she okay? Looked kinda crazy to me and really wanted that burrito—hey, can I have a bite?”

“No,” I snap. “I don’t share food.”

He holds his hands up. “Just a question.” His right hand goes to the roof. “Let’s get on the road.”

The driver starts the car. We’re pulling out and right past her when I see her kick the tire.

And then.

The tear.

It was the tear that fell from her left cheek onto the cement that did it. “Stop the car!” I’m yelling, no idea why other than I wanted our driver to hear us. Before I realize what I’m doing, I’m out of the limo and right next to her. “Hey, you need help?”

She rolls her eyes. “Oh perfect, a knight in shining armor, yes dear sir, please rescue me from my turmoil!”

“That was a weird voice, could have done better.”

“It was on the spot.” She sticks out her tongue. “Anyway, yes and no, it’s a rental, so I have to call the company, and I still have to make it to the rehearsal dinner in the next few hours and as of right now I’m one burrito short of killing the next person who talks to me, so yeah, not so great.”

“Where’s the date?”

“Oh, you mean my sexless priest? He had to do a sermon for a school—or something. I don’t know. Anyway, he doesn’t get in until tomorrow.”

“Oh.”

“Yup.”

“So you’re stuck.”

“Keen observation, yes.”

The wind suddenly picks up, her hair glides across her face getting stuck in her pink lip gloss and truly all I want to do is tuck it back then see if her lips taste like candy since they’re so pretty.
