“I can’t tell you what hell I went through in the few minutes it took me to get to her. I didn’t know what happened. Then I came upon the scene of her mother getting ready to hit her again and I rushed to put myself between the two of them.” Now she looked at Elaina.

“As soon as she saw me coming to her rescue it’s like she went insane. She was about to strike me but this child put herself in the way and that’s how she got slapped so hard across her face.” I squeezed her all the harder and kissed her forehead.

“Thanks for protecting my mother.” I didn’t tack on from yours, but it was very telling to everyone in the room. It may not mean the same to everyone else here, but it meant a hell of a lot to me.

She just nodded and I put my hand over the mark on her face. The shit was still hot which made me even angrier. Just how hard did she hit her? “It’s okay baby, stop crying.”

I knew she was crying more because of her hurt heart, than the pain in her face, my soft girl. But at this point I’m still not sure if it’s because she wants her mother’s love, or if there was something else at play here.

Dad showed up not long after and just as I questioned this morning before I left him, I wondered now what was really going on with him. Again he seemed different. Not quite his old self, but no longer the bastard who’d left my mother.

“Dad?” He looked confused, something he’s never looked before as far as I can remember. And when he looked at mom, it was like he was seeing her for the first time in a long time.

“Sissy?” He walked over to her and the look on his face… what the fuck is going on?

“Lucas?” She was studying him like she’d never seen him before either and I all but forgot that we were standing in a police station and why.

“Dad, are you feeling okay?”

“What? Oh yes, a little dizzy but…”

“I think we should take your dad to the doctor.” It was the first words she said since I walked into the room, words that though rather forceful, made no sense.

But once again it was her eyes, the pleading I saw there that tipped me off to the fact that there was something she was trying to tell me. “Okay baby, we’ll get dad to the doctor.”

“What about Ms.…?” I glared the cop into silence.

“Dad, I’m a little worried about you. You said yesterday that you were being forgetful, and now today you’re dizzy. Mom, call doctor Forrester and tell him we’re coming to him now.”

Mom looked just as confused as dad by my request but did my bidding all the same. And the one in my arms relaxed enough that I felt it. I wasn’t going to push her again to tell me what it was that she was hiding, she’d tell me when she was ready.

For now, I put everything else aside as we followed mom and dad who were talking like an old married couple, out the door. Was dad suffering from dementia or some other mind altering disease, is that it?

What else can make a man change this drastically back and forth? I didn’t have the time to look into it right now though, up ahead I could hear dad telling mom he really didn’t need a doctor.

Her answer was one that I hadn’t expected to hear ever again. “Yes, but we don’t want the boy to worry unnecessarily now do we? When all it would take is a few measly minutes at the doctor’s office to put his mind at ease.”

I watched as he patted her hand, the hand she had through the crook of his arm. “You’re right of course, that son of ours is a worrier isn’t he? He’s a good boy; at least he likes hanging around his parents. Most of our friends haven’t seen hide nor hair of theirs in a while.”

I followed along behind with Elaina’s hand in mine not saying a word. Some shit was going on that was way over my head, but I’m almost inclined to believe that my dad had been under the influence of something for the past few months.

The thought infuriated me so much I was almost tempted to go back into the building and break her fucking neck. She’s not getting off for hitting Elaina either. But it will have to wait. If all goes the way I’m expecting at the doctor, we should be getting rid of her sooner than later.

Mom had called and set up an emergency appointment so there was no waiting and dad was soon called back to the examination room.
