We hadn’t talked about children yet. My mouth went dry, my anxiety spiking.
“I thought…” He placed his hand over my heart in a familiar, soothing gesture. “I want to have a family with you, Massimo,” I confessed, calmed by his steady presence. “Is that something you want too?"
He looked at me as though I was his greatest treasure. “More than anything,” he rumbled. “We are already a family, Evelyn, but we will grow together. We can live in this villa and wake up to this view every morning with our children.”
He turned my body so that I faced away from him, looking out over the infinity pool toward the Faraglioni rock formation where we’d kissed for luck. His big hand splayed over my belly, cradling the place where our child would one day grow.
“If this is home, say the word, and it’s ours.”
I sucked in a deep breath, soaking in the scent of the sea and the rich purple bougainvillea flowers that grew around the patio. It mingled with the scent of leather and amber.
“Yes,” I declared, peace settling over me. “This is home.”
He stepped away, and I mourned the loss of his body heat for only a second before he dropped to one knee before me. A small black jewelry box appeared in his right hand, and he snapped it open to reveal a huge pear-shaped diamond solitaire ring. It matched the shape of my necklace perfectly.
“Be my wife, Evelyn.” He slid the ring on my finger before I could fully formulate my reply.
“Yes,” I gasped out. “I’m yours, Massimo.”
He surged to his feet and swept me up in a devastating kiss. This powerful, dangerous, protective man would be my husband, the father of our children. He was my future. My everything.
He kissed me fiercely, a promise and a slight warning. I belonged to him, and he would never let me go.
I opened for him on a sigh. I was exactly where I wanted to be.
