Jace is gonna go off and run the world, Track’s probably going to end up in some federal prison for breaking somebody’s face and Alex and Jared will settle down and live nice unassuming lives.

Then I looked at Tammy and the way she was with her friends, the way she always is these days, and I wondered what her life would look like without them in it. And my heart hurt.

“We can’t split them up.”

“What did you say Shane?”

“Uh, nothing.” Damn I spoke out loud. Jace didn’t look like he believed me but he didn’t push. Now I had a new worry gnawing at my gut. How the hell do I keep us all together?

JACE

* * *

This is what I like. Days like today. After the shopping trip from hell we all went out to dinner and now me and princess pain in the ass were back home with her million and one bags.

Sleeping beauty was upstairs resting after I fucked her ass to sleep to keep her from annoying me and getting into my shit. Which I was about to get up to. I had the monitors in my room working overtime so I’d know if she woke and needed me.

“Dad!” I walked into his study where he can usually be found these days since mom had deserted him for Sian’s mom. Her dad was at their place overseeing the last minute details on the repairs before they moved back in, so this one was on his lonesome. Jared was somewhere sniffing around his girl I’m guessing as per usual.

“What did you do now?”

“Me? I didn’t do shit, what do you mean?”

“I’m just checking, these days I can never be too sure. You know son, I’m still trying to figure out how you went from never getting into shit, to constantly staying in shit.”

“That’s not me, that’s your daughter in law.”

“Uh-huh! What is it you want this time? Between you and your mom I haven’t caught a break in damn near two decades.” The hell? I’ve never given this man a day’s worry in my life.

“Fine grumpy, I’ll do it myself.”

“Get back here!” His nosy ass, no wonder he likes Sian so much. Two peas in a pod.

“What do you need son?”

“Who’s the best interviewer? The one who used to interview dignitaries and heads of state?”

“She’s retired.”

“Get her out of retirement.

“How soon do you need her?”

“The day after tomorrow the latest. And have her come here.” I could’ve sworn I heard him say ‘that’s my boy’ but when I turned around he pretended an interest in something on his computer screen like he didn’t say shit. The fuck is up with people doing that shit lately?

“By the way, did Sian confirm that bit of news for you yet?”

“Nope, she’s still pretending it’s not true. Say dad, you don’t think she’s doing that because…”

“She’s doing it because you are your father’s son.”

I didn’t begin to know what the fuck that meant and told him so. “How many places have you known your mother to go without me son?”

“What’s that got to do with anything?”

“Think about it. It’ll come to you.” I know he wasn’t trying to say that I was anything like him. His overprotective ass.

“By the way dad, thanks for the extra security today.” He didn’t even look embarrassed at being caught.

“If she’s carrying my grandson….or granddaughter, then she’s just as precious to me as she is to you.”

I felt that low blow in my gut. He did that shit on purpose. “Son dad, grandson.” This old man! I left him and went back to my wing. I had shit to do and he’s just as annoying as she is. Fuck my life!

Jace

“Jace, is that…?” She pointed at the stately looking elderly lady sitting under the shade umbrella by the pool looking like she was here for afternoon tea as she spoke to mom. She’s a world renowned reporter, the best in fact and has been for over fifty years.

She’d been retired for a while, but no one had yet taken her place. That’s because she lived in an era when shit meant something and people had integrity and shit. And today she was here to interview the Saunders heir and his bride to be.

“Yes it is.”

“Why is she here? Is she interviewing your dad, your mom, what?” Nosy ass!

“She’s here for us.” I led her with my hand in the small of her back so she couldn’t bolt.

When we woke up this morning I may or may not have lied to her about some things. To keep her busy I’d taken her out of the house, under the pretense of taking Maggie for a ride. Well, it wasn’t so much pretense, but more that I’d lined things up right.

I knew it was going to take time to set up cameras and lighting and whatnot and didn’t want to answer her fifty questions. So I had another surprise waiting at her family’s home.
