When Drake finally allowed himself to come, she felt his heat fill her. His shout of “Mine” echoed in the room as he pushed himself deep.

Please let it always be this good, she thought to herself.

Count on it. His response resounded quickly in her mind.

Chapter 5

Her eyes flew open at his mental answer. Staring at him in shock, she thought, He can hear me?

“Yes, mate. Our bond is strong. In times of high emotion or stress, if we are close, I may hear you clearly, and the dragon may speak to you.”

“So, you can’t normally hear everything I think?” she asked, shifting away and pulling the comforter around her. “The dragon talked to me mentally.”

“The dragon is a beast of great psychic and physical powers. As a man, I do not have all the strengths he enjoys.”

When she looked at him skeptically, he challenged her. “Try it. Let’s see if I can hear your thoughts.”

I hate canned asparagus.

“I have no idea, Little one. Did you think of something pink? Maybe a piglet?”

Aurora looked at him skeptically. “Really? You aren’t just bluffing me?”

“No, Little one. I will not lie to you. It’s possible that I might understand your thoughts when our connection is strongest and emotions are high. Or when we are in contact with each other. We’ll have to experiment. But now, I need to feed you.”

Her stomach growled at his suggestion. “I am hungry.”

“Let me take care of you,” he said softly as he unwrapped her from the comforter.

Scooping her up in his arms, Drake carried her to the attached bathroom. A huge tub took up a massive section of the room and she instantly wanted to submerge herself in it. He didn’t pause to turn on the water but carried her into an equally large shower area.

She looked around as he set her on her feet on the stone floor. The whole thing looked like rock formations. It had been carved carefully into the mountain. When the water started, it flowed down over a jutting rock to form a waterfall.

Completely enchanted, Aurora danced into the cascade and dunked her head into the warm liquid. When she sputtered out, she wiped the water from her face and grinned at him. “This is the best.”

Drake guided her in front of him facing the water and grabbed a bottle of shampoo. Pouring a healthy portion into his hands, he applied the product to her hair. The feel of his fingers rubbing her scalp made Aurora feel like purring. She closed her eyes in enjoyment as he worked the suds through her shoulder-length brown hair.

A thought interrupted the delight, and she started forward into the water. She popped back out with suds in her eyes. “Ow!” she howled, turning her face into the water.

“Little one,” he said gently and wiped her eyes with a soft towel. “Did you slip?”

“That’s her shampoo!” Aurora said, horrified. “It’s her bed we made love in.”

“No, it’s not.”

His arms wrapped around her and kept her from fleeing the shower. “Listen to me. Then I will answer all your questions.”

“Not just one per room?” she challenged him.

“No.”

That took the fight out of her. She relaxed against him. “How could you wash my hair with your dead mate’s shampoo?”

“I would not do that to you or to her. This is an entirely new bedroom and bathroom. You are the only one who has stepped foot in this shower other than me. All the products are new.”

“That’s hard to believe,” she muttered, feeling like she might have overreacted. That would be impossible for an ordinary man. But a dragon…

“Lean your head back into the water, Little one. You do not need any more soap in your beautiful eyes.”

Cooperating as he shifted her, Aurora told herself she would listen.

A short time later, Drake pulled one of his sweatshirts over her head. Wearing baggy men’s shorts with the waistband cinched as tight as possible, Aurora felt anything but glamourous. The look in Drake’s eyes as he looked at her was very flattering, though. Maybe oversized clothing was prized in the dragon world.

The thought of her walking down a model’s runway in these clothes made her laugh out loud.

“That makes me happy. I haven’t heard you laugh,” Drake observed.

Unwilling to let him get off easy, Aurora forced herself to remember what was happening. “How do you expect me to believe this is all new stuff?”

“Shoes,” he said evenly and put flipflops on her feet that looked her size.

Taking her hand, he led her back into the big room and to the hallway beside it. They reached a set of stairs and Drake scooped her up into his arms before beginning to climb.

“I can walk,” she protested.

“It is a long way. For me, it is a sad journey made only when a mate is no longer mine.”
