Men with rifles stood near the elevators and staircase entrances.
Giorgio walked up to us with a huge smile his face and blue leather gloves on his hands.
The Butcher hugged his cousin. “How are you?”
“The Brotherhood is uncivilized, but I find that there are some enjoyable people and moments. I am also becoming less fearful of the Lion.”
Don’t let the Lion hear you say that shit.
“Good.” Jean-Pierre let Giorgio go.
I pointed to his gloves. “I like them.”
“I am finding that blue is a beautiful color.”
Oh shit. Did Blue let him hit it?
We approached the elevator.
“The Bratva just took over the hotel like it was theirs?” Jean-Pierre rolled his eyes. “This is why they are not allowed to return to Paris. Too much disrespect.”
The elevator doors opened.
We stepped on.
Boris, Giorgio, and three of the Butcher’s guards followed.
Jean-Pierre shook his head. “The Lion’s sister was shot a few times too.”
“W-what?” I stiffened. “Is she okay?”
Jean-Pierre nodded.
My body relaxed. “Fucking Valentina. She needs to take her ass back to Russia. I don’t need to worry about her too.”
Jean-Pierre stared at me. “You worry about the Lion’s sister?”
“Don’t you worry about all of that.”
“Very interesting.”
“It was a onetime thing that will never get repeated.”
Boris glanced my way. “I thought it was a few times—”
“Eh. It was a few times in a one time period situation.”
Jean-Pierre smirked. “Hmmm.”
We made it to the top floor where the presidential suite was at and left the elevator.
“Never mind the situation with Valentina and me.” I eyed Jean-Pierre. “Anything else happen while we were gone that I should know?”
“We are heading to the Lion and Mouse to see. I am hoping this predicament will end soon.”
“Me too. I’m ready to get back home.”
“Hmmm.” Jean-Pierre smiled. “And where is home, Maxwell?”
“I have no idea, but I know it’s not in Italy, California, or New Orleans.”
“I am glad France has not ruined you yet.”
“Me too.”
“For what it is worth.” Jean-Pierre sighed. “You are always welcome in France. As long as you can behave yourself around Eden.”
“Thanks, man.” I spotted Blue and King David standing by a door. The odd thing was that it wasn’t the door leading to Kazimir and Emily’s presidential suite. It was a room several doors down from their place.
Naw. Something isn’t right.
Blue and King David were expected to personally guard the Lion and Mouse. Wherever Kazimir and Em went, they should be right there too.
They’re not in the presidential suite. They’re in that room Blue and King David are guarding. But why?
I walked ahead of everyone and stopped in front of Blue and David. “Why is Em in here and not in the presidential suite?”
David gave me an awkward smile. “Welcome back.”
Blue nervously shifted.
I pointed at the door. “What’s going on in there?”
David sighed. “I’m not sure exactly, however, the Lion has requested that no one disturb them.”
I tilted my head to the side. “Why not?”
“I’m not sure.” King David gestured down the hall. “However, I suggest you go to your room, clean up, and order something nice. Your suite has been freshened up each day waiting for your return and there are—”
“Motherfucker, open the door. I want to talk to Em right now.”
Blue cleared her throat. “Max, they told us not to let anyone in.”
“Again.” I looked at her. “Why not?”
She shrugged.
I screwed my face in annoyance. “You all are supposed to be watching over Kazimir and Emily, but you let them up into a room without knowing what’s up?”
They remained silent.
“And I know they’re not fucking in there because you would have just said that.” I crossed my arms over my chest. “Plus, we know Em can’t be silent when she fucks to save her life. I would have heard her screaming out ‘Oh! Oh! Oh! Oh!’ And the Lion would have been grunting like a fucking animal—”
“You need to go to your suite until they’re done.” King David frowned. “Welcome back.”
“And if I don’t go to my suite?”
Blue rolled her eyes. “Max, you just got back. It’s been a lot going on these past days. It’s been really rough.”
“You’ve had some rough days?” I let out a delirious laugh. “Did you have to run from a flame thrower, and make sure your foot didn’t get blown up by Vietnam-war era explosives in a front yard? Imagine being stuck in a fucking pit with skeletons floating around in the cold rain and then being baptized in deer blood and guts by a butt-naked priest who prays to an eagle!”
Blue and King David exchanged odd looks.
“And don’t even get me started on the Voodoo Queen and the incestuous grandparents.”
“Al-right.” King David held up his hands. “You’re really high right now. Blue is going to take you downstairs to get some water—”
“I’m not high.” I pointed at the door. “What are they doing in there?”
Anger spread across David’s face. He spoke through clenched teeth, “I don’t know.”
