“The Great Eagle will protect us.”
“And what if he doesn’t.”
Horror covered Timur’s face. “The Great Eagle is a female.”
“Fine. The Great Eagle is a chick. What I’m saying is—”
“Get in the water!”
“Okay. Okay. But. . .how deep is it?”
Timur assessed me, moving his view from my feet and running it up to my head. “You’re tall. The water will hit the center of your chest.”
“Can I get a floaty or something just in case?”
Timur scowled.
Not wanting to push the crazy man any further, I took my time lowering. I was scared I would fall forward. It was damn near impossible to get to the ground, but I got there. When I did, I sat by the edge of the pool and then slowly dipped my toes into the murky red liquid.
It’s warm. Ewww. But would cold have been better?
I lowered my feet deeper into the pool. Warm slime swirled around the heels of my feet and rose up my ankles. It was sticky and thick like molasses. My stomach twisted in disgust.
This is on so many levels of not cool.
I sank my legs lower. Now the water reached up to my knees.
I caught movement from the side and turned that way.
Timur went to the corner and put the keys back on the hook. Next, he leaned the AK-47 against the corner.
The gun is down. I have a chance.
I put my view back on the water.
I’ll have to get in this dirty ass deer blood water first.
He would come inside with me.
Then. . .
I pictured us wrestling in the water. Blood violently splashing everywhere and filling my mouth and nose.
All I had to do was hook my cuffed wrists over his head and choke his neck with them. That would mean somehow getting behind him.
Get in the water. Nothing will happen until you get in there.
I held my cuffed wrists in front of me and scooted forward.
God, I’m back to talking to you again.
I scooted up another inch.
Thank you for getting me out of the hole. Now I need help getting away from this crazy man.
I closed my eyes and jumped into the pool. It was a horrifically disgusting experience. The thick sticky liquid splashed around me and I immediately regretted getting in there. I got some of it in my mouth.
I dry heaved.
It was so warm. I opened my eyes and trembled. Since I couldn’t see anything in the water, I feared maybe shit was swimming around in it. Any slight little touch and I jumped. For all I knew something was going to grab my ankle and pull me down.
This is so wrong. So wrong.
Timur headed for my way. “Are you ready for salvation?”
I swallowed. “I’m ready. Come on in here and hurry up.”
I’m going to beat the stuffing out of your crazy ass.
Timur whistled and continued forward.
Rage filled me.
Fucking got me in here, getting rabies and all types of shit.
I jumped to the side again. Either something slipped by my thigh or I imagined it.
I blew out air and did a slight jog in the liquid. Not sure why, just needing to move the blood water around me.
Timur went to the other edge of the pool and stepped down.
I frowned. “You could have told me that stairs were over there.”
“We all must take our own path.” Timur stepped deeper into the water.
Yeah, man. Come on over here.
Timur lowered into the water and it rose up to his chest. “Today you will be a true believer.”
I stopped slowly jogging in place and readied myself to fight.
“You’ve been feeling this ache inside of you.”
I tensed. “What?”
“This ache.” Timur touched his chest. “It’s been with you for a long time. This emptiness.”
I blinked. “Okay, man. Whatever. Let’s get to the baptizing.”
He stayed on that side of the pool. “You haven’t been able to fill the ache all your life. Have you?”
“I’m. . .ready to talk to the Great Eagle and—”
“Women. Drugs. Murder.” Timur shook his head. “None of it has helped with the ache. Has it?”
I sighed. “Let’s just do this.”
“Has it helped?”
My bottom lip quivered. “No. It hasn’t.”
“When are you going to fill the ache?”
I looked away. “It can’t be filled, man.”
“It can.”
“It can’t.” I glared at him. “Not the sort of ache I have. Pure evil has hollowed me out.”
“There’s no evil that can win against God—our infinite Great Eagle.”
“If God was real, then I wouldn’t be here.”
“No, Maxwell. God brought you here.”
Shivers ran up my spine. “Why would He do that?”
“She did it because you didn’t listen to all of her other messages. That’s what will happen when you don’t understand the other ways she’s communicated to you.”
I gritted my teeth.
Stop talking to him and just get ready to kill him.
“The ache will leave, when you accept the Great Eagle.”
“Okay, man.”
“Do you believe me?”
“Yep.”
Timur leaned his head to the side. “Tell the Great Eagle to come into your life. Say the words.”
