She’d spent a lot of time searching for the cause and had even invited maintenance to come to take a look but to no avail. I had done my homework very well and knew that there was no way for them to find the shrimp where I had placed it within the curtain rods.

She’d cleaned up the maggots, which was expected, but she was now paranoid about where they came from and how they’d gotten there. I’d watched her change the sheets on her bed and scrub down the room while screaming and crying as she slowly lost her mind.

I smiled when I saw her take a sip from the fancy bottle of water, one of many I had seen in her fridge the last time I was at her place, and sat back to watch the show.

She started out strong, and it was easy to see the men in the room admiring her in the short skirt she wore with the button-down shirt that showed off her ample breasts even though it was nearly buttoned to the top.

Her legs looked perfect in the heels that added about three inches to her height, and her ass, which she went out of her way to show to the room each time she turned to the presentation board, was a thing of art.

I saw the moment her hand faltered as she reached to point out something on the board, heard the rumbling of her tummy even from my place at my desk in my home office, and broke into a smile when she covered her mouth with one hand and her tummy with the other as she went running from the room.

The way the room’s occupants covered their faces with their hands, it was obvious that she had left a trail of stink behind her. “I think we should postpone the presentation to a later date. Can one of you ladies please check on Miss. Simmons?”

Mark addressed the room before they all started filing out, whispering about what had just happened. I closed the camera app and went back to my reading.

CHAPTER 5

Miss. Hot to Trot had to leave work early that day, or more to the point, she had to clock out but still lingered inside the building because she couldn’t get too far away from the toilet for long. I imagine the thought of driving home with loose bowels wasn’t very appealing to her. I felt no pity.

If I’d been thinking, I would’ve added something to her car, but I hadn’t and didn’t think I needed to now anyway. She took her sweet time getting to the apartment, and I watched as she used the wall to make her way inside and to the bathroom again.

It had only been a few hours, but she was already looking depleted. I watched emotionless as she grabbed another tainted bottle of water from the fridge and guzzled it down. I spent the rest of the day watching her in between reading as she ran back and forth to the toilet until she decided to just hang out in there.

What I could no longer see I heard through the bathroom door as she moaned and groaned pitifully. There was a text asking her what the hell had happened and warning that she was the butt of breakroom jokes back at the office.

I wondered why he didn’t leave with her, since they were supposed to be lovers, and why, instead of using the time to go check up on her on his lunch break, he was calling me. “What’re you doing?”

“Oh, nothing much, just some light reading. How are things with you?”

“Interesting. I might be a little late because there was a bit of a snafu at the office today.”

“Oh?”

“Yeah, nothing for you to worry about, though. I just wanted to let you know that I was going to be late.”

“Thanks for letting me know.” I hung up the phone, a little disappointed. Did this mean he was going to her?

I don’t know how to feel about this. If he was still willing to go to her after all the time we’d been spending together is it really worth it to stay in the marriage? On the one hand, I hate the thought of losing my husband to someone else, but on the other, how much of my dignity am I willing to give up?

Maybe I should wait and see. As much as the thought pains me, I wanted to see how he was with her; after that, I’d know what to do. Their texts were mostly dry on his end, with most of the sultry comments coming from her end, and I was still miffed that he was keeping his secret phone so well hidden.

It made me wonder just how long he’d been at this and how many others there were before her. I sometimes wonder about fate and what had led me to that area that day. I mean, what are the odds that I would be in that place at that time to see what I saw?
