My control snapped. This is why gentle and slow kept flinging themselves out the window. The mouth on this woman was just begging to be fucked—literally.

She milked me of every last drop, raked my back, dotted my chest and neck in possessive marks, and then laid my head between her breasts, running her hands through my hair as we drifted off to sleep.

Yes, Mackenzie Blaine did a terrible thing to me.

She made me fall in love with her.

Chapter Nine

Mackenzie

Liam and I made out like teenagers the whole way up to my apartment. We stumbled out, making it as far as the door and lingered just short of the nob—stretching our perfect night just a bit longer.

“I was thinking...” I began, running my hands over a body that was now all mine. “Laurel and I live with Sunny, and I love that. But I’d love to live with you too.”

“Are you asking to move in after one date, Miss Blaine?” Liam nipped my nose. “You move fast.”

Giggling, I nipped him back. “There’s no rush. When the time comes, we can set up a nursery for Laurel, I’ll split my nights in your bed, and in the mornings, the four of us will wake up and have breakfast together. Like a family.”

“That would be—”

“Kenzie!” We jerked, snapping around as Genny stormed out of the elevator. “Where the hell have you been? You called out sick today. Let me guess.” She eyed her brother up and down. “You caught a bad case of the D.”

Liam straightened. “Good morning to you, Gen. I’m going to check on the girls and send Fuller off for a well-deserved break.”

I murmured thank you, even though I should’ve said the opposite for leaving me alone with his irate sister.

“Did I not fully explain how serious it is that we find that fucking Brotherhood puppet as fast as possible?!”

I inched back a step, blown away by her anger. This wasn’t always-on-pissed-and-loving-it Genny. Her face was red, blue eyes blazing, and dark bags riding beneath them.

“You were supposed to finish those stupid alterations so we could get those clothes in the Closet and be done with this already? Now is not the time for you to call out sick!”

“Gen,” I said calmly. “I called in for the morning and told Vance I was going to the doctor’s, but would be back in the afternoon around two. At that time, we’d meet in my office for him to give the completed designs their final inspection. If you’d take it all the way down and give me five minutes, I’ll be ready to go.”

She folded her arms, eyes narrowing. “If the clothes are done, where did you put them? They’re not in your office. If they were, I would’ve skipped this foolishness and shoved them in the Closet myself.”

I frowned. “They’re not in my office? They should be. Maybe Rylee, Jace, or Zoe took them off to use the mannequins. There are never enough of those to go around.”

“Whatever. Chop, chop, Blaine. We’ve got business to take care of.”

Even though she popped my good mood like a blimp, I swallowed my retort and went in to change and kiss my daughter goodbye. Genny explained the pressure she was under to solve this quickly and get back to Harlow. She took her duty to protect the women of Harlow seriously. Just like River did whatever was necessary to protect the homeless men and women of Cinco.

I didn’t know what it was like to have that many people relying on me, but I did know there was nothing worse than letting your family down.

Genny and I sped as fast—but not fast enough—to Caddell House. I studied her out of the corner of my eyes as we passed through the lobby.

“Gen, is everything okay? You’ve got a strange energy around you.” Years of living with my sister put phrases like that in my head, but it was the right phrase for the anger coming off her in waves. “Did something happen?”

“Nothing happened, Mackenzie. I’m just tired of waiting around while this guy laughs behind our backs. I feel useless, and that’s a new one for me.”

I squeezed her fingers. “We’re doing something about that today. Once they’re in the Closet, they’ll make their move. This is their money-printing machine. We know this plan will work, Gen. We’re ready.”

She didn’t reply.

We headed upstairs where I confirmed Sunny’s new wardrobe and the mannequins they were hanging on were gone.

“I’ll find the team and see where they put them.”

“Let’s go,” she said.

“Why don’t you stay? Relax. I’ll bring you back a coffee after I’ve got them and Hollywell.”

Genny blew past me. “Are you still standing there?” she called over her shoulder. “Let’s find these clothes, Blaine.”

Sighing, I gave up and went after her. We went down a floor to the junior designer’s room. Jace bent over his workstation, fussing with ever-finicky silk.
