One of the large guys came forward and Grant glared at him. “Don’t touch my dick.”

Miguel laughed.

The man patted him down, roughly as he did so. Grant was going to take great pleasure in killing him, as he was the other guy.

Seconds passed and they turned to Miguel. “He’s clear.”

“So, no wire.”

“Why the fuck would I be wearing a wire?” Grant asked.

“You expect me to believe that out of the blue you’re going to turn against your brother, your club?” Miguel asked. “I gave you that card over a week ago and now, after you have time to plan, you expect me to believe you.”

Grant shrugged. “A lot can happen in over a week. Your brother can cost you a great deal.”

Miguel’s brows went up. “True. Julio cost me time.”

“Time? You went to prison?”

Miguel laughed. “No, he cost me time in taking what was mine. His petty dogfighting ring brought too much heat. I wasn’t ready to take on Hernandez. It’s cost me a lot of good men.”

“Brothers.” Grant put his hands on his hips. “Bull has cost me for the last time.”

“Your woman?” Miguel asked.

“Yeah. Aria’s gone,” Grant said. “She’s not coming back to me. Bull has seen to that.”

“I can help you,” Miguel said. “I can give you everything your heart desires. The club, your town, riches, and your woman.”

The only thing he wanted was Aria.

“How?”

Miguel smiled. “That will come in time, but first, I need you to take care of two little problems.”

“What?” Grant asked.

Miguel clicked his fingers and the bodyguards placed something in his hands. Grant watched and it looked like a little box, but there was nothing distinctive about it.

“Bull killed my brother and he cost me dearly. Before he dies, I want to see him suffer.” Miguel stepped toward him. “I want you to give this to Maddie and Lindsey.”

“What is it?” Grant asked.

“Poison. Not the kind that will make them go to sleep. The kind that will make them suffer right in front of his eyes. You give this to them, and then we’ll talk.”

“A test?” Grant asked.

“Of course.”

“Seriously, why bother reaching out to me? You want Bull dead, say the word.”

“All in good time. I don’t believe in being rushed. This will go my way.”

Grant squeezed the vial in his hand.

“Kill Maddie and my niece,” he said.

“Yes. To be the leader of Carnage, Grant, you need to learn to strip away everything that matters to you. No one can be a weakness.” Miguel smiled. “I expect them dead by nightfall.”

Grant nodded. “Consider it done.”

Miguel got into his car and drove off. As for Grant, he stood there waiting.

Pat was the first one to make it to him.

“Did you hear?” Grant asked.

“Yeah, I heard.”

“Bull better have a fucking plan, because right now I don’t know what the fuck to do.” He would never harm Maddie or Lindsey. Never.

He held the vial out to Pat. “Well? What the fuck is he thinking?”

“We should go,” Pat said.

Grant shook his head. This was some messed-up shit. Killing dogs, now women and kids. Grant wanted to kill this son of a bitch, and soon. First, though, he and Bull had to find a way of faking Maddie’s and Lindsey’s deaths.

Great, fucking great.

Chapter Seventeen

Aria walked with Ernie and Bruno through the woods. She had already passed the park and stopped to see a couple of the kids playing. She loved to watch them and couldn’t help but admit that she’d love to have children of her own.

This made her think about Grant and what he’d been doing since she left. Aria tried to think of how long it had been since she last saw him—it had been easily a couple of weeks. She hadn’t even seen him around town. He’d not been the one from the animal shelter to bring the dogs in for a checkup either. The person who assisted the dogs had changed every time. She recognized Rusty and Sweet, as well as Bud and Rip, but other than that, they were different people.

Gripping her shoulders, she stretched out her neck while the dogs kept sniffing the ground on their way home.

Jase wasn’t happy with how fast she was losing weight. He wanted her to keep a food diary of everything she consumed, which, in fact, wasn’t a lot. She just wasn’t hungry. Her diet the past few weeks had consisted of toast, sandwiches, and probably some crackers if she felt like it.

Ernie came toward her and Aria suddenly realized she’d come to a stop. She had just stopped walking. Crouching down, she gave him a stroke behind the ears. “You’re a good boy, aren’t you?”

Bruno came toward her and wanted his turn as well. “I love you both so damn much.” She felt the tears start to well in her eyes.

Everyone in town knew about her sister and Grant. The rumor had spread faster than any gossip she could recall. She didn’t have a clue who had said anything. Was it Grant? Was it the club?
