“No,” Carver says, meeting my stare through the rearview mirror. “Sam has some of the best trained guards in the country. Disgraced ex-military, hitmen, bullshit like that. I don’t want you getting close enough to need a knife.”
“Okay, I get it,” I say, feeling the intense adrenaline building inside me. “But I still want a fucking knife.”
Grayson just sighs and reaches forward before opening the glove compartment and pulling out a beautiful silver dagger. “Be careful with this,” he tells me. “This is one of my father’s most prized possessions.”
I scoff as I take it from him, examining the designs on the hilt. “You mean the guy who’s going to screw me over after everyone else already has?” I ask, slipping the blade down between my tits and letting the underwire of my bra hold it firmly in place. I doubt letting it jiggle around in my pocket is a great idea. “Yeah, I’ll be sure to be very careful with it.”
Grayson rolls his eyes, but the second he reaches for his door handle and pulls the lever, seriousness washes over me. “Are you ready?” Cruz demands, meeting my eyes. “Now’s your last chance to back out. No one is going to judge you if you’re not ready. You know we’ve got this with or without you.”
“I’m ready.”
“Good. Then let’s go.”
The five of us bail out of the Escalade and we race toward the property. Grayson grabs my hand and pulls me behind him, while King and Carver take off to the left, sticking to the shadows and keeping out of sight. Cruz darts to the right and I have a feeling that’s the last I’m going to see of them until this is over.
Grayson tugs me hard, forcing my strides to keep up with his. He watches the security cameras and brings me to an immediate stop, his arm slamming across my chest to keep me from taking another step. “Wait,” he orders.
The camera swivels, and the second it passes, he yanks hard on my hand and we bolt for the front gate. There is a tall concrete pillar and we aim straight for it. “We have less than ten seconds to get over that thing,” he yells back at me. “I’m going to throw you up there, but the second your feet touch it, you need to fly right off the fucker. Got it?”
“Yep.”
Fuck. Is now the right time to tell him that heights scare the shit out of me? Nah, I’ll let it slide and see how it goes.
We reach the pillar and I hardly have a chance to step up in front of it before Grayson’s hands are interlocking and bracing under my foot. I jump at the same time he launches me up and I catch the top of the pillar. “Holy fuck,” I mutter under my breath, pulling myself right up. My ass hits it and I look down, my heart racing.
“Get the fuck down,” Grayson tells me, already pulling himself up behind me. I close my eyes and jump. My ass comes down in the grass as my back slams against the concrete pillar, but I don’t have a chance to check just how bad it is as a loud ferocious growl hits my ears.
My eyes bug out of my head, seeing the feral dog racing at me. My hands instantly fly up to protect my face just as Grayson lands on the ground in front of me. His hand shoots out and I hear a strange noise before the dog falls to the ground.
Grayson whips around to find me, offering me his hand and instantly yanking me to my feet. “You good?”
I nod, glancing down at the dog. “Did you kill it?”
“No, just tasered it. It’ll only be out for a minute, so we need to go.”
He pulls me along and I can’t help but glance back at the still dog. He’s out like a light. Maybe I need to get one of these tasers and practice on Carver.
Sam’s yard isn’t nearly as big as mine or the boys’ so getting to the side entrance of the house is a lot quicker than I’d expected, but as we get there, we find the door locked with a retinal scanner staring back at us. Grayson curses before pulling me toward a window. “Guess we’re doing this the old-fashioned way.”
He walks right up to the window and feels the glass, checking just how thick it is before a smug grin stretches across his face. “The dickhead gets the best security system money can buy but goes stingy on the glass. Dumb fuck.”
And just like that, Grayson’s elbow goes straight through the glass. A cut slices along his skin and he sucks in a sharp breath, but it’s not enough to stop him from what he’s doing. He steps back and pushes out the rest of the glass with his hands before reaching for me.
