Possibly.
“You’re a good host.” Kissing his head, I slouched down a bit so he could rest his head on my chest. “And you’re cute.”
That got me a smile he tried to hide by burying his face against me, but we were back to his dramatics in seconds. “Daddy, I bought something.”
Were we finally making progress?
“I know. You scared the FedEx man with your sketchy purchases.” My ridiculous answer got another giggle-sigh combo from him. “If you make him too nervous, he’s not going to deliver stuff to you. Wilder’s mailman is so freaked out by him he can’t order anything online. I think he frowned at the guy one time and that was it.”
We were at the point where Camden had seen pictures of my biker outside, marshmallow inside best friend, so he knew why the mailman was just a bit nervous.
I expected another laugh or smile at the very least, but my curiously acting cutie went very still.
What did Wilder…oh…
So I was slow, but eventually I caught on to something.
“I’m not sure I mind you scaring this guy, though. He sounds questionable.” Just because I’d caught on to the issue at hand didn’t mean I knew what to do about it quickly. “Besides scaring the delivery guy, what did you do today?”
Camden still wasn’t moving, but after a moment, he took a deep breath. “I got the box today, Daddy. You’re supposed to ask about the box.”
“But it’s making you nervous and I don’t like that.” Kissing his head as he let out a slightly frustrated huff, I couldn’t help smiling. “I want you to be confident and feel safe and cheerful…notice I didn’t say happy because that’s not always a reasonable goal.”
And that got a bark of laughter from him as he shook his head like I was being ridiculous. “Daddy, sometimes I’m going to get nervous. That’s okay.”
I scoffed. “I’m not agreeing to that. It’s my job to make you feel safe…and happy on a regular basis.”
He was doing his best not to even smile at that one but I could see him fighting it and losing. “Daddy…you’re a terrible brat sometimes. Did you know that?”
I snorted. “I’m not agreeing to that either.”
His giggles had both of us relaxing, so I kissed his head again and started stroking his back. “You were very nervous and that makes me nervous.”
It took Camden a moment to think about that.
“I think that makes us codependent or something.” His answer had me biting back a laugh, but I couldn’t help the way my chest jerked. “Such a naughty Daddy.”
“Not agreeing with that either.” Tickling him lightly just to hear him giggle again, I hugged him tight as soon as I stopped teasing him. “Alright, as long as you promise to be cheerful and relaxed and content and not worried, I will ask what was in the box.”
“Daddy.” He was back to thinking I was ridiculous, but at least it meant I wouldn’t have to be the one to ask. “I called Wilder last week.”
Well, that was unexpected.
“Hmm, that explains why he kept giggling the last time I talked to him.” I’d thought he’d just planned out some kind of prank I hadn’t run into yet.
Camden nodded, like with whatever had happened, the excitement made sense. “I had to talk to his boyfriend.”
“This sounds like a very long game of telephone that made you very nervous, baby.” Kissing his head again, I made long sweeps of my hand over his back and down his legs. “Should I plan revenge for them making you uncomfortable? We can start mailing strange things to his house so the mailman thinks he’s super sketchy. I’m thinking sex toys in weird boxes that announce what they are on the outside.”
There had to be a company that did shit like that.
My cutie couldn’t seem to decide if he wanted to laugh or groan. He finally settled on a deep breath and went back to shaking his head.
He was getting a good workout at this rate.
“Daddy, they were helping me.” His tone said he thought I was either stupid or ridiculous and couldn’t decide which. “I wanted to buy something from…from that store to surprise you and I didn’t know what to buy. So…I might’ve gotten his number from your phone and called.”
My chest jerked in silent laughter as he shrugged. “He was very polite. I see why you like him. Though he asked me if he should tell me all the naughty stories about college so that I had good ammunition, but I told him no thank you.”
Groaning, I looked up at the ceiling. “Okay, in my defense he was sexy and clueless…so the combination was too tempting not to fuck with.”
Giggling again, Camden finally sat up, grinning ear to ear as he wiggled and perched himself on my lap. “You were naughty, Daddy.”
