Well . . . you are tonight since you’re stuck in here and the quiz is happening without you.

Saying no to Shawn wasn’t easy. She hated it. And he’d gotten this look on his face . . . like he was trying to think of a suitable way to punish her.

And not in a fun sort of way.

Not that she knew whether punishments could be fun or not. All of her experience came from reading books or listening to her friends.

So basically she had none at all.

And now, these two men who she cared about were about to go off on one another. And she didn’t know who would come out worst.

Well, other than Noah’s office.

“I’m an open book,” Remy said. “You can ask me anything.”

Loki eyed him with suspicion. Shit. She wouldn’t put it past him to have already had Remy’s background checked.

But she couldn’t be mad at him about it. She’d want to do the same for him. To make sure that anyone who held his heart was worthy of it.

And now she felt like throwing up.

Loki nodded but still looked suspicious. However, he turned that dark gaze her way.

Uh-oh.

She moved around the desk.

“That’s not going to save you,” Loki warned. “What have you been keeping from me, Tink? And since when do we lie to each other?”

Isa wrung her hands together, feeling anxious and unsure.

Remy reached over and placed his hand over hers. “Easy, baby. Just tell him.”

Loki’s gaze narrowed, but he didn’t say anything about Remy calling her baby.

She sucked in a breath. “I didn’t lie about anything, but there was a bit I left out. Nothing huge, really. I just . . . I didn’t want to upset you. I’m sorry. I told you that headlights blinded me and that’s why I ran off the road?”

“Yes. Isn’t that what happened?” Loki asked.

“Not . . . not exactly. There were bright headlights in my rearview mirror. But that wasn’t why I went off the road. The car . . . it came up alongside me so we were driving side-by-side.”

Loki started to pace, his face growing hard.

“And, um, the reason I pulled off the road so quickly is because the car cut in front of me. I turned the steering wheel and braked hard. The passenger side of the car smashed against the tree. Luckily, I wasn’t too injured. Just a bit disorientated and sore.”

“What. The. Fuck.” Loki stopped pacing and turned to glare at her. “Did they stop? Who was it? I’m going to fucking kill them!”

“They kept going,” she whispered.

Was he breathing? He didn’t look like he was breathing.

“I’m guessing it was someone who wasn’t from around here. No one here would drive that recklessly.” She shook her head. “And they would stop. I, um . . . after they drove past, I got out. I wanted to check the damage to the car. To see if I could still drive it.”

Loki just stared at her. The look on his face was so intense that it sent a shiver up her spine.

“I got a bit dizzy and sat down on the ground and that’s when headlights started to come toward me.”

“Him.” Loki nodded over at Remy.

“No,” she said quietly, wincing. “They came from the same direction as the car that had just cut me off had gone. And I think the car started to slow as it got close. Then when Remy approached, it took off again.”

“You think that whoever ran you off the road came back? Why?” Loki snapped.

“I don’t know . . . I’m guessing they felt guilty and wanted to check I was all right. But then they chickened out and drove off when they saw Remy approaching.”

“Or they ran you off the road deliberately and were coming back to hurt you,” Loki said in a dark voice.

Yikes.

“Kind of seems like a worst-case scenario,” she said. “I mean, nothing else has happened since so I think it was random.”

Loki turned away, his shoulders heaving. Then he let out a loud yell that made her jump.

“Loki,” she whispered. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you. Are you all right?”

He shook his head. “I . . . I wasn’t there for you . . . you could have . . . and you kept that . . .” He couldn’t finish any of his sentences but she could piece together the meaning. And she felt lower than low.

Especially when he moved to the door. Where was he going?

“Wait! Loki! Please!”

He paused in the doorway but didn’t turn to look at her. “I just . . . I just need a moment.”

The door shut quietly behind him and she slumped into a chair behind the desk.

“Fuck,” Remy said quietly. “I’m sorry, baby.”

“Why are you sorry?”

“I pushed you into telling him.”

“No. You thought I was going to tell him. And I was . . . I should have . . . I should have told him. This is my fault. It’s just I know that if something were to happen to me . . . that any idea of a threat to me, Loki is really protective. And most of the time, I like that. I need that. But this was more than a bully calling me names and stealing Razzie. I mean, I don’t think the person driving that car was deliberately trying to harm me or anything. But I . . .”
